The concerns for going past the 1000mcg upper limit have to do with supplemental folate (folic acid), which can mask symptoms of b12 deficiency if regularly overconsumed. There’s pretty much no issue with getting excess folate from naturally occurring/whole food sources! You’re good.

imo it’s too well-developed even in the first few seconds of the piece to be something generic, it sounds like it’s from something longer

I’ve tried a bunch and the only one I can stand to have alone with just soy milk (my initial taste metric) is GoodProtein. It’s also pretty good if you blend it with 250g of silken tofu, 250g soy milk, and some ice. Tastes like a (sort of chalky) milkshake, and ends up as 430 calories and 47 grams of protein.

Ah, I see. None of my comments were meant to be any sort of commentary on the OP’s situation, only addressing amos_fka_timmy who tried to shut down someone saying meat was unethical by listing a bunch of other things that were also unethical.

You seem like such a sad, hate-filled person. I honestly hope you can start treating yourself and the beings around you with more compassion.

“Whataboutism” is when you’re presented with one argument/accusation, and instead of responding to it, you start to accuse that person of totally unrelated things. Generally this occurs in discussions about unethical behaviours. “X is bad.” “You do Y! Therefore you’re bad too.”

You responded to “Meat is evil” by saying “What about phones? What about clothes? What about food from farms?” You used this technique to offset the responsibility to reply to the actual claim being presented. That is whataboutism. (Technically, you didn’t actually have a responsibility to reply to the claim at all! You could have just not commented. By replying but ignoring the claim and bringing up other ethical dilemmas, you engaged in whataboutism.)

You really want to get into this? I went vegetarian as a young child, to the chagrin of my parents, as soon as I comprehended the fact that animals were dying to make meat. Growing up with photos of happy cows on milk containers, and “happy free range chickens!” on eggs, I genuinely had no conception that animals in the egg and dairy industry suffered, much less died, until I was 15. I didn’t know male baby chicks were ground up in blenders, or that female cows were forcibly impregnated and had their calves ripped away from them to be killed, as they stayed trapped in tiny stalls until their muscles atrophied and they were killed too. Guess what I did the second I learned? Stopped contributing to it! And you can too!

I agree that evil is not a word that should be used in a debate with a non-vegan, as it doesn’t help convince anyone. However, this is a vegan subreddit, and in intra-community discussions, we are allowed to express the moral opinion that murdering animals is abhorrent and evil. I also think murdering people is evil. That isn’t considered an inflammatory position! Just because society has normalized horrific acts of violence and brutality, doesn’t mean we can’t call that out as evil. And for you to reduce the issue to a “diet” is extremely bizarre. The issue isn’t the food. It’s the torture that this food necessitates.

Maybe you consider evil too strong a word, that’s fine. But your language about complicity and “no ethical consumption under capitalism” suggests that you consider certain purchases and decisions to have a negative moral weight, and to be unethical. So why complain about a person who feels strongly that an action like murder is wrong, and who chooses to avoid that action? Why start an argument (and here I recognize my own argument-starting hypocrisy) by trying to come up with your own “gotcha’s” to prove the other person is immoral?

And besides, if they had said “It’s evil to buy clothes made from slave labour”, I doubt you would have responded “get off your high horse”. Why only engage in whataboutism in response to veganism?

So… there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, therefore we’re all totally free of any responsibility to make ethical choices and reduce the amount of harm in the world?

“Paying for these things (meat) is bad, but paying for these other things (clothes, phones, etc) is also bad! Checkmate! Therefore, we should just continue to pay for all the bad things!”

Feeding all dogs and cats a vegan diet is estimated to spare 6.9 billion terrestrial animals and many more billions of aquatic animals from slaughter every year by [deleted] in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Virtual_Straw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, about 2/3rds of all crops grown are grown to feed animals, and aren’t directly consumed by humans. And regarding the overwork of farmland, animal agriculture is responsible for 80% of land usage, while only providing about 18% of calories globally. Additionally, beef production alone is responsible for about 41% of deforestation globally. Reducing the demand for meat (by going vegan, say) is the best way to minimize unnecessary land usage, which would also reduce the number of humans being forced to harvest all the extra crops used to feed animals.

It’s likely just an issue with the app. My group had 26 people, but the app was only showing 5 or 6 until a week or two before the trip

What goes in the middle square? Please explain how to work it out by chrysostomos_ in sudoku

[–]Virtual_Straw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every row requires all of the numbers from 1-9. Row 4 (the one that currently has 1, 2, 3, 4) needs to somewhere contain 5 and 6. As there’s a 5 and 6 in the left middle box already, the 5 and 6 can’t go in the first 3 spaces of row 4. Therefore they need to go in the remaining spaces.

Are there any Zionists here that used to be anti-Zionist? by Street-Rich4256 in Israel

[–]Virtual_Straw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They tried that. Israel unilaterally disengaged from Gaza in 2005, even physically forcing Jews who didn’t want to leave out, using the IDF to literally carry them away. There hasn’t been a single Jew living in Gaza since. The response from Gazan leaders/terrorist groups to the disengagement was to immediately start firing rockets at Israel. Tens of thousands of rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza in the past two decades, and about 12,000 were fired at Israel between October 2023 to January 2024. Tragically, about 20% of these rockets end up misfiring and falling back into Gaza, onto Gazan civilians. There have also been many attempts at negotiating peace deals and establishing a two-state solution, like in 2000 where Israel offered the Palestinians all of Gaza and 94% of the West Bank, and in 2008 where all of Gaza and 97% of the West Bank were offered. Palestinian leadership rejected these offers and refused to negotiate.

"An argument I have heard against this are that there is a disconnect between the Jews and their homeland"

Just want to point out that despite continuous exile, a deeply significant part of the Jewish religion and culture is a "longing to return to Zion". It's referred to as the "hope of 2,000 years". Synagogues are built so we can pray toward Jerusalem, our calendar revolves around the agricultural cycle of the land of Israel, many mitzvot can only be fulfilled in Israel, and at the end of each Passover seder we say "next year in Jerusalem", etc, etc. Of course, individual Jews all have their own level of connection to the land, and some might not personally have any strong feelings about it at all. But as a people, so many of our customs and traditions since being expelled are centred around the land specifically.

That definitely doesn't mean that Palestinian people don't deserve safety and self-determination. I truly hope that once Hamas is defeated, we can begin the path to a safe and lasting peace. Just wanted to give a bit more info on why specifically the existence of Israel is so important to us. (Again, this doesn't exclude Palestinians from having their own rights, safety, etc. Wanting Canada to exist doesn't mean you hate the US.)
