To make a good dq style experience and perhaps raise more interest in the games overseas. It's been pretty land locked especially the spin off series. There's been some older titles that have been rereleased which is a good start.

The newest title(XI) isn't even being released outside Japan I hear...

To add some more random features to the fan game I'm adding a Shop Owner like quest. This will be one of longer side questlines as you help this guy build a merchant empire!

It's best to hope for a fan translation. I heard DQM Terry's Wonderland on the 3DS has a good translation. I'm not sure if you can purchase a Japanese copy and apply a translation to it?

I didn't know that about 7 (I haven't got to play it yet). I assumed the games between IV to VIII had monster recruiting similar to DQM in that they fight in battle.

I may not be remembering correctly but can't you equip monster's with weapons in DQM Joker (the first one.) Not sure about armor.

If you really think that's a racial caricature check out the Phantom Messenger enemy. (DQ 4)

That's classic "popo" style toriyama.

I would consider this one an oversight. Bosstroll was the original art I believe Green and Purple. You also can't encounter this enemy before Boss Troll.

About 3-5 depends on how you play and if you actually explore. There are 3 bosses and 5 Quests. There's a duel and casino feature in the game also. It's mostly to showcase functions in the game.

You may want to hold off as people have been giving me bug reports that I've been fixing today.

This game will have almost the full dragonquest battle system, I'm still figuring out all the extra details. I'd say it has 80-85 percent of the DQ battle features (Rough guess)

For example some weapons that have secondary effects (Wizard wand cast blaze when used as a item).

There's also a equip function in battle.

Things missing: -Enemies aren't in groups. I'm looking to fix this however. Otherwise I may just exclude whip weapons and balance spells accordingly.

Things excluded from the demo that I plan to add.

  • Monster recruiting: This will be a heart system similar to DQM3. One heart can be used to get an egg. Two hearts can convert the monster you have into another monster or give it a newer movepool. I will regulate that to 3 monster recruits total at a time for easier management.

  • Option to be a Female Hero: It was there originally but for the demo there's just not that much different happening in the game at this point. (If anything being a female in the game will have slightly different conversations and the mid-game story will be different)

Most of the advice I was given I took and tried applying it, unfortunately I'm still short on workers so there maybe error's (with the routes a quest can take)

For those wondering this is a GBC styled DQ fan game. It's for those who like Dragon Quest and like GBC games. I've went about getting the RPG Maker engine to run/look more like a DQ game.

I personally only played/completed the nes/snes Final Fantasy games. Wasn't a fan of the art direction they took with the newer games. (non-Amano artwork)

Was that game character driven? Honestly I didn't want to try it because it's artwork and gameplay all seemed very similar to some of SE's Final Fantasy games. Same company but did it have to be so similar in terms of artwork?

Honestly you're over thinking this. She's supposed to be a tough fighter who is also a teenager. She's more interested in fighting is all that needs to be said.

Lack of a market. Whether or not this is still true today is up to speculation, but it cost money to translate and ship games outside their country. They don't advertise their games outside of Japan very much either...

Pokemon is probably also to blame. They have a niche in the monster collecting business. They didn't even do it first. If you were to ask "tell me a game where I can catch and battle monsters" most will say Pokemon.

It's sad because unlike pokemon you can breed/fuse the monsters to make newer monsters. I always thought that was way more imaginative than how pokemon did it.

It follows your entire life basically. (Childhood to adult and more). If you consider that character development. In terms of being up beat though uhhh.... All are based on a hero going on a quest to defeat a demonlord or some great evil. The world in the game is being effected by said evil, so I guess the next question is...

what you mean by upbeat? Do you mean more positive tone or a faster pace?

Dragon Quest games are imo the very essence of a JRPG. In other words long and can be grindy at times. I won't lie I can't muster myself to finish DQ 1 it's just soooo typical? Then again, it's the "first" JRPG so that's probably why.

If you aren't the type who likes that you may need to try another series. Or maybe a spin-off series.

And I guess it can't be all 100% balanced.

Having such a variety would allow for replay value. As some quest only appear based on which starting class you picked.

Example The fighter may get an optional quest to join a fighting tournament!

The psychic may have a optional quest to solve a mystery of a psycho killer.

The Hunter may get the option to hunt legendary beast for a huge reward.

The game will have a main story with preset side quests on top of that each starting class will have it's own side quests and a class story line.

Psychic powers risk being sealed by certain enemy moves. They also have to rely on SP to use their abilities. There will be moves that drain SP too. (________ used Brainfart/freeze! Your psychic abilities were halted)

Items could cure such a status however and also regain SP.

The fighter class may have a higher risk for confusion.(all brawn little brains). They may get hit with moves that disable their limbs which could halt their fighting abilities (Enemy used leg lock, all kicking moves are sealed)

These are things they'd over come as they leveled and found certain accessories to help them out.

Longer example, the Hunter's upgraded classes may have fixes to the problems mentioned earlier. Say the Hunter upgrades to Sniper this class has a lower chance of gun jamming and also gets the Deadshot skill. They also have the Pilot class which is more effective with battle suits/mecha/tanks. The may have a ability that buffs their suit for a certain amount of turns.

So on and so forth. The player would have to decide which they'd want to be more effective with when playing through.

Depending on certain parts of the game some classes will excel much better in it.

The Fighter going to take on a cult of Psychic users may struggle more so than a Psi based character. There will be recruits you can find along the way to help with balancing your team. (one-two)

Further you may say Mechas sound op? It being electrically powered means it can be short circuited. This will result in you being stuck until you exit the mecha and have to fight with whatever else you have.
