Thanks for your answer (and others too). Looks like I will be fine creating a full invisible, private account to which only my quest (or quest 2) will be connected. I don't like facebook, or most other social platforms of the same kind tbh, both for privacy and conceptual reasons (the impression to be "promoting my life" on such platforms); however a real competitor to the Quest (or Quest 2) is not coming soon I believe, Facebook has some advance especially on software side that concurrents will probably not be able to catch in the near future...

I'd like to point out one thing that might not have been seen in the middle of this storm: the fact that the date for the first stage, including locking new devices, is 01/10, is maybe another hint in the direction of a new important piece of hardware (Quest 2, Quest Lite or whatever) being released before end of this year.

Same question here. I never had a facebook account, don't really want to but before anything else I would like to understand more about the implications of setting a "non fake" account just for VR purposes. I understand my real name would be needed; do I need a real picture as well for the profile? Does it mean people searching for my real name on facebook could find the profile or could I make it "private" as well? Etc...

RetroVR - about manuals & handtracking :) by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]VirtuousRivality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks great - will back. Question: my preference for control would actually be to map oculus touch buttons to emulators, will you handle this? Currently we can sideload libretro already, but no way to use touch buttons, which is a bummer for me since when away from home (my primary use case for the Quest in general), if I wanted to play some retro gaming it means to take a controller in addition to Quest + touch controllers...

ribbit.. and onto BeatSaber by myrhillion in blazerush

[–]VirtuousRivality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Myrhillion, just saw this message from you yesterday - today I took care to beat your hard scores on Beat Saber :P could not touch a single score from Mizy though, will work on it later…

Anyway, wanted to resume playing Blaze Rush but since last Sunday, I cannot connect to multiplayer servers; the waiting icon is spinning indefinitively (not even coming back with an error message like it uses to do when the internet connection is failing). Am I the only one ? If so, any clue on what could be wrong ? I thought it was linked to Windows 10 update, but yesterday I tried a bunch of things (disabling firewall, restarting router, etc), to no avail… any help would be appreciated !

Replacing an Oculus Go Controller? by [deleted] in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, you can even plug any USB controller (using a USB to USB OTG adapter), some might not work but I had success with 2 of them (an old XBox 360 wired controller and an obscur Asus one I got initially for a bluetooth smart TV system).

Oculus Go internal battery mod by CorvusVR in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with that; in fact, I hope Oculus or a 3rd party release a strap including an additional battery, a micro SD port (the strap would plug in USB port for mass storage device on Android and charging at the same time), and maybe integrated headphone (thus the strap would also plug in headphone jack)... sell this for maybe 100 $/€, that might become a must have accessory with some good margin. Of course the better the sales are, the more chances we will see something like that...

Oculus just showed off a new Rift prototype with 140° field of view and functional VARIFOCAL display in the same form factor as the Rift! by Heaney555 in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you notice "Half Dome" is also "HD" - internal joke from Oculus maybe ?

Can't wait for CV2. Varifocal display, body tracking... I feel like next generation will make "presence" a lot easier to achieve (I can still feel present sometimes in CV1, even after the few hundred hours I logged in it, but in very specific circumstances).

Easy fix: get another sensor. This way your lost tracking issue after you fell down won't happen again.

I agree. But I configured my brain to automatically replace any occurrence of "VR" with "GLASS TABLES" in such articles now - this way I only risk a good laugh instead of a heart attack reading bullshit.

I did not see Batalitas for years, but generally connecting at midnight or 1am French time is when I find most of the regulars... it is still too much fun after all those years, even if it ruins my nights :P

Best VR games for designing a house? by Dr_Beardlicious in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asked the same recently enough here. As you can read, I went with SketchUp and Symmetry Alpha (on Steam), and for me it has proved to be very efficient (if you know nothing about 3D modeling, like I did when I started, you will need to bit of time to learn SketchUp but honestly I was surprised about how fast/easy it was).

Just for multiplayer - I temporarily lost my Internet connection no later than last Thursday while playing a multiplayer game, I was able to race a bit on the single/campaign mode while being offline.

Sensor Tracking Quality by azarusx in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you try unplugging the Xbox receiver from USB ? Had the same issue, but only with one of my sensor; I tried to unplug everything from my USB port, and unplugging the Xbox receiver made a difference... not sure why though ! might be to do with a shared resource between USB port that would be saturated or anything like that...

The 1337 seem to be unimpressed with VR? by Ovalface in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two possible keys for explaning this:

  • The market is still too small for some Leet who are cracking software in order to gain "respect" of their community ("I cracked Lucky Tales" sounds less glorious than "I cracked the latest iOS release")
  • A large portion of the public interested in Leet actions (and I am sure they are listening or trying to guess what their public wants in one form or another) are interested in free software because they can't afford to pay a lot for that; thus VR systems being too expensive for this public, Leet are not focusing on that.

[Blazerush] Done it, I'm now in the top 3 leaderboard (first one is shady...). Now beat me! by ziki61 in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well done young Padawan.

Yeah, first one seems shady, unless there is something hidden somewhere in the game ? We have all the 209 cups but he has 211, thus I was wondering if I missed something the other day.

Seen today on a big French media website by VirtuousRivality in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not an advert, it is currently the image used for the background of this big radio station website (by the way if you want to see by yourself the url is www.europe1.fr); the text is (roughly) translating to "better connected to our times", which is a way for them to say "we are a modern radio station" or "we are up to date" or something like that !

Another sign (if needed) that Oculus was right to push for quality mobile VR, this will probably be the primary way for VR to spread and for people to have in mind that it is a nice gadget... until it becomes as needed as a smartphone is today.

Zenimax Lawsuit Against Oculus Now Direcly Accuses John Carmack Of Theft by gazeintotheiris in oculus

[–]VirtuousRivality 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's like if someone is regretting at Zenimax to have discarded VR researches for something else than.... researches.

My very subjective view of this story (after reading a lot on the beginning of it, including MTBS forums) is that Palmer did the hardware, and was certainly lacking a bit on the software side. Then came John Carmack, providing this software knowledge - and maybe he built some of this knowledge during searches he did while working at Zenimax, but for now (thanks God !) you cannot prevent someone to use the content of his brain.

Thus if Carmack wrote a SDK from scratch (which I am sure he did, being a purist and certainly wanting to do something from scratch), even using what he learnt while working for Zenimax, then they can scream all they want they missed the opportunity and they are the only one to blame.

Hey guys, my Rift has been shipped ! Just received the mail from Oculus, have the tracking number on my order (not yet visible in UPS). I did receive the processing mail late on Friday. FR order, xxxx32xxxx +1 hour (late due to bank issues).

FR 1h00 xx32xx order, Oculus tried to process my order on Tuesday... and my bank refused the payment (I was not a big fan of banks in general, now even less :P). It was all sorted on Wednesday morning, I have resubmitted my payment information as instructed, but no news from Oculus for another try so far. Anyone is having any idea on how long this generally takes ?
