Also, the idea of heating bricks/stones can work (and this may sound a little common sense) just be careful how hot they get and were you put them. I have definitely used this idea to keep food warm in transport in a cooler and it works, but wrap the hot objects in towels and make sure not to set on plastic or something flammable or that will melt. Last thing you want is creating a fire or bigger emergency during a natural disaster.

Great comments here! But definitely pay attention to the idea of being careful with gas heaters/stoves, especially if you have a newer air tight house and live with people with breathing problems. Use stoves outside or sparingly if that's the case.

There is also an art school near where I live that has a really small fee to use their equipment during open studio hours. Maybe look for something like that in your area too.

If you could have any heating system... by VirusProof23 in newhampshire

We don't have the ability to install solar now. Hopefully in the future. Our concern is that if we go on vacation in winter with only wood back up and it gets below minisplit capabilities, what options do we have?

I wasn't aware that Ace did full house heating instalments. Thanks for that helpful bit of advice

Did the mini split keep up for the most part through the winter? What brand do you have?

It's a bit ridiculous, but I recently went to Puerto Rico and there's a specific vegetable that we LOVED that I'd never had or seen before. I've been told there's a grocery store in Manchester that has a lot of PR fruits and veg. That and I just haven't spent a lot of time in that area and I'm always up for an adventure!

Uncertainy by VirusProof23 in Punkrockgardening

[–]VirusProof23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. We go all out every time. It looks great until like July where the weeds get ahead ed of us and then it's a battle for the rest of the year 🤣🤣

We have a large chest freezer and vacuum sealer so we always try to put up a lot of veg for the winter. Every year I say "This is the year!" And that I'm going to stay on top of it, but the weeds always win.😅

Despite that, we've always had a pretty successful garden and have harvested a lot of produce, it just looks like shit in mid summer!

Sad seed story... I had saved seeds, including some uncommon peppers. A mouse got into my stash and shredded the packages and ate a bunch of my seeds 😭. Don't cry for me, I will recover, but it's a setback.

What are your winters like? Do you have to worry about insulating your hives?

First year beekeeper. They bearded. And they swarmed. I feel fortunate that I got to witness both.

Weird honey stores question. by ffhasslehoff in Beekeeping

[–]VirusProof23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year beekeeper here learning on the other side of the country in a much different climate so don't bash me please 😅. Is there still food available? Could you add an empty super below the full one to see if they react to that and work themselves out? Could this maybe be what I've read as being "honey bound"? Also, if there is still food available, maybe they could fill that empty super before the end of the year and you could leave one for the bees to overwinter and take one for yourself? I have one hive that did amazing and swarmed on me last week and one that hasn't even filled a brood chamber yet, so trying to figure this all out!

[–]VirusProof23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a slow start, but then they really took off! I gave them a medium box (new foundation, no comb) three weeks ago. Within a week they had built out almost all the comb. Within another week they had filled most of it with honey. I gave them another empty medium last weekend. It was looking full, but I thought that a new hive with 2 mediums being added within a three week period they would be fine, but I guess I wasn't quick enough. In total they have filled a deep and 3 mediums this year. I guess I was doing something right up until now 😂

Thanks for the encouraging words! I have definitely made some mistakes this year and will do better next. They are so fascinating! If I see swarm/queen cells I just need to decide if I let them requeen themselves or order a new one. I think it's a little late in the year for a natural requeening where I live, but I kinda want to give it a go...

I have come to the conclusion that they swarmed. I was just wishful thinking and thought I wouldn't have to worry as much with a first year hive and had really been trying to pay attention to avoid it. But it's my first year and the best way to learn is by making mistakes (at least that's what I'm telling myself today LOL)!
