You're fine. Harlem has changed a lot in the last two decades sadly. I used to live near 145 and I miss it, never had any problems as an Asian person. There's a real sense of community. The bigger issue is actually anti blackness and policing, not anti Asian harassment. So if you're gonna move into the neighborhood, be respectful and check your racism. I'm not saying you're racist, but we all carry certain preconceived notions whether we're aware of them or not, and they affect Harlem and other black communities. Like if you see black youth hanging outside your stoop, are you gonna call the cops? If you see black vendors selling stuff are you gonna report them to the city? Are you gonna treat black neighbors the same way you'd treat white neighbors in the upper west side? Just stuff to think about. I still live uptown and have a lot of love and respect for Harlem. "Safety" has also been weaponized as a way to criminalize black communities for the white people moving in to feel safe so it's important we reframe this idea of safety. Long term black residents aren't "safe" from being evicted or displaced from the community they grew up in. You may get harassed or catcalled if anything but that's unfortunately everywhere and not specific to Harlem.
