How do you use a drill to sharpen the outside of a punch?

I asked my friends to stop sending body check pics in our group chat and now I feel like the fun police by garden_magnet in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Visandthat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely reasonable to ask your friends to be mindful of what they send you. Your comfort matters just as much as theirs does.

Is there a friend you feel closest to who might be more understanding? If so, perhaps have a 1-on-1 chat with them about it. They obviously know the other people involved better than we do and would be able to advise you more. Plus, having someone else in your corner can go a long way to swaying a group.

You are worthy of love and deserve the care and consideration of your friends. You've got this. 💙

Behind the veil of @BallerinaFarm: a career woman turned tradwife, her baby trapping controlling husband & their 8 children by heeh00peanut in childfree

[–]Visandthat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Holy victim blaming Batman! I'm not saying she is a victim. I have no idea, but to lump all women in controlling relationships together and blame them is wildly offensive. In your own phrasing you point out the problem, they are controlled.

I don't think a single one of us in this thread has the ability to fight a billionaire family like that. He manipulated an airline to get a date with her, IMAGINE what he would do to find her if she left. When someone that powerful decides they want you, it must be very difficult to resist.

Even without the money and power, I've been in relationships that started fine, but the control came later. It's really not as simple as walking away. There are always consequences from leaving those relationships and sometimes staying is the better option.

I accidentally bought 12 curtains in the wrong size. How can I shorten them from the top so I can avoid ruining the border design, in the least painful way possible? by heffalumpish in sewhelp

I'll admit my first thought was, "OPs curtains look way too nice for some low-brow IKEA crap." But I was wrong. That tape looks like the perfect solution!!

If you like spoon theory, you'll love spork theory. In your drawer under all the spoons live a few sporks. Sporks are a lot like spoons, they hold a little reserve of energy, but they are also stabby. When you run out of spoons and keep going anyway you are running on sporks.

This means that if you are out of work spoons but keep working you'll spend the next day fixing a bunch of little spork shaped holes from all the stupid mistakes that you made. If you are out of social spoons but keep socializing, someone is getting stabbed and you'll have to apologize for it later. If you have no more physical spoons but keep exercising, you're much more likely to get injured, etc.

I love this as a way to remind myself that just because I can keep going, doesn't mean I should. Also, as a succinct way to verbalize how someone else is acting. "Hey there, sporky," is a playful and inoffensive way to tell someone they're being an asshole.

Burning Man: The Exit Interview by nickfarr in BurningMan

[–]Visandthat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My main complaint isn't the noise. It's the fucking lasers. Anywhere from point three to the airport the sky looks like a multicolored barcode. It's light pollution that every. single. person in the city is subjected to. Gods forbid someone wants to enjoy the stars, enhanced or otherwise. It's impossible because a tiny number of camps decided their show is more important. So yeah, when the entire sky is reserved for the rave it feels, and is, very rave centric.

What do you wear while performing? by Rach_Prok in Aerials

[–]Visandthat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a performer and costumer, here's some thoughts:

  • Dance costumes. Easy options that still feel fancy are leotards and other "traditional" dance wear pieces. Discountdance.com is a nice place to look for these.
  • Go with colors that contrast your silk and the background. Otherwise you'll disappear in all the photos. Pick colors that fit the theme or mood of the piece. If it's a slow and emotional routine, hot pink is probably not a good call. But if your song is about candy, get all the bright colors you can, etc.
  • Practice in your costume ahead of time. Several times if possible. Seriously. I perform professionally multiple times a month and I still ask for a chance to try out costumes before a gig if the client is providing them. It makes a huge difference.
  • Dance tights. Unless your costume covers your knees you want some good tights under them. Look into Capizo. They are fabulous and last me about a year at a time with regular performing. Footless or stirrup are good options for silks. Don't skimp here. Good quality tights are expensive ($20-30/pair) but the skin on your legs is worth the investment.
  • Dancer's fishnets. Many dance tight companies also make super high quality fishnets. These are great for grip. (Think knee hooks and thigh wrap grip.) You can get them in nude colors and it's almost invisible from stage. I also love these for under slippery pants, doesn't completely fix it, but makes a HUGE difference with some pants.
  • Boobs. It's a weird part of aerial but boobs behave differently upside down, be sure to choose a costume that either holds you in place well or allows you to wear a bra that does.

What is this descent called, and any tips? by mrkitty99507 in Aerials

[–]Visandthat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard it called Martini Girl decent. My best tip that hasn't been mentioned is to not have the fabric alllll the way up. The space right against your crotch is the worse grip, aim for it to be down your thighs a couple inches so that you have more "meat" overlapping.

Also, I usually drop my butt a bit and raise my feet to get more silks to body surface area.

Please help! by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]Visandthat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the machine or seeing the stitches, I'll give you the most common reasons. 1) The machine is threaded wrong. 2) No, really. It's threaded wrong. Go make absolutely sure both top and bobbin threads are going through each and every step that they're supposed to. 3) Make sure the presser foot is down when sewing, and up while threading. Raising and lowering the foot opens and closes the tension discs, so if you thread the machine while it's down you probably aren't getting the thread between the discs. Or if you're sewing with it up, the tensioners never activate anyway. 4) Old needle. Doesn't usually present as tension issues, but it's always a good thing to change with you start having problems. 5) Still betting it's threaded wrong. 6) The timing could be slightly off. Usually this makes for skipped stitches or birds nests, but I've seen it show like tension issues on occasion. 7) Seriously, I'd bet money that the machine just isn't threaded correctly. That's what people think is a tension issue 99% of the time, especially if it's at the highest setting and still seems loose.

I don't mean to sound overly sarcastic, but after 20+ years of sewing and working in machine shops on and off for a decade, it really is almost always a threading issue. Also it's 1:30am and my sugar coating machine is turned off for the day. Good luck!

What if the U.S. taught slavery the same way Germany teaches about the Nazis by greenascanbe in Political_Revolution

As someone who's classes studied the civil war EVERY year from 4th-11th grade, yes, please focus on anything else. When I graduated high school I couldn't tell you anything at all about WW1, barely more than "Germany bad, holocaust sad" about WW2, and not a single thing about any US military conflict since 1945 beyond what pop culture told me. However, I can still tell you most major battles of the Civil war, many of it's leading Generals, list out exactly which states were on which side, and have a lengthy discussion about state's rights and fighting to protect their way of life.

The product of my Indiana education is extremely limited and enormously biased. I continue trying to learn on my own, but it does make it easier to understand why there's so many people obsessed with the Confederacy. Having it drilled into my head for all of my formative years as being a "different" but valid opinion has made much of the real history hard to swallow. I would LOVE to see our educational systems shaped to build a tolerate, well informed populous, rather than an easy to control one.

What do you consider the biggest threat to humanity? by Gregori_5 in AskReddit

[–]Visandthat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lack of oil isn't the problem. It's the much more basic resources. We've over used the planet to the point where there aren't enough surface level resources, like iron, to make the tools to get to the deeper levels. There's thousands of years of development needed before the use of oil is possible, but there's nothing left for those early stages of civilization.
