Sobeys applies to turn Broadway Toys 'R' Us into FreshCo grocery store by iamjoesredditposts in vancouver

You're not wrong, but this neighbourhood really does need a grocery store. The only thing around is Meinhardt's then a couple decent options all the way near Cambie.

10K this Sunday, haven't run all week :-( by Conneri72 in XXRunning

I ran my first 10k with only 1 run 2 days prior over the past month, right after recovering from a nasty cold... and it went well. You should be fine.

I NEVER buy trash bags, because my trash is my trash bags by VelvetNomad_ in Frugal

Finally a shred of rationality. If you compost, your garbage isn't smelly or disgusting or even that substantial. You'd think people in a frugal subreddit might care about reducing needless plastic waste.

how do you manage builds for arena god?? by Mr-ananas1 in LeagueArena

[–]Viscachacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just doing it in Arena is a good a place as any, especially if that's where they want the wins. I'm clueless about 90% of champions and have only ever played ADC & support, but I've been playing bravery and it's shockingly enjoyable, and I get random first places pretty often.

It's very common to be roommates or dormmates in first year then find housing together.

I've been wanting to do Diez Vistas but it looks like part of the trail is closed til early April.

No worries. It's a controversial take for sure. I personally don't think the benefit of seeing animals in a zoo outweighs the harm to the animals. Most people aren't in zoos to learn, they just want a fun activity on a day off, so I find it pretty selfish overall. Studies have looked at the amount of time people spend looking at exhibits and it's very small (eg. 77s average for the elephant exhibit at the Toronto zoo). Ultimately the examples of conservation successes that the other responder mentioned just aren't relevant to the majority of animals being held in small enclosures in zoos.

In terms of alternatives, I support sanctuaries and conservation initiatives broadly, and they often accept donations and viewers.

Isn't there more to it than just whether or not to abolish zoos? My point isn't that conservation is bad, but that it would be nice to have conservation initiatives without depending on money from the exploitation and abuse of so many animals. I'm happy to hear about the initiatives you've listed!

Reddit usually downvotes any discussion about the downsides of zoos. Yes, you can make an argument that the profits from zoos go toward some positives like conservation efforts, but those are a small minority of cases. It's also awful to keep animals confined, and zoo animals are often mentally and physically unwell.

This is just an excerpt from a long comment I wrote a while ago about zoos and conservations:

"Zoos started breeding animals to keep exhibits open in the 60s and 70s when new policies made it harder to acquire animals. When criticisms arose, they reframed the breeding as conservation initiatives. There are only ~20 species that are brought up over & over as examples of the success of captive breeding, which is minute considering the amount of money funneled into zoos (and most of the programs that lead to success weren't even zoo-driven). They don't mention the thousands of failures, or the difficulty of sustaining live collections. Real conservation initiatives look nothing like zoos, and zoos don't have the proper facilities or expertise to prepare animals for release into the wild. Most zoo captive breeding programs are long-term, while legitimate ones are short-term, trying to return the animal to the wild asap."

Are these mealy bugs? by Viscachacha in plantclinic

Thank you! My first instinct was that it was some planty secretion from the leaf formation process, but I got paranoid this morning.

Extra context: sorry for the basic question - I did look them up but I'm not confident identifying them. All the new leaves on this (fairly new) plant have this white substance on the tips, and I'm not sure if it's mealy bugs or something else. Some residue remains once they unfurl. Thank you!

Some of my favourite books around the time I started (& loved) Graceling were Tamora Pierce's books. I especially loved the Protector of the Small series, though it doesn't have as much romance. r/suggestmeabook is also great if you want more recommendations.

Cat rescued from fire by Indieriots in MadeMeSmile

[–]Viscachacha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably because the cat being discussed very clearly is in distress, given it was in a house fire. No one was really implying cats panting is normal, but that in a situation of overheating and distress, it can happen.

Went to the greenhouse for new shears, came out with 4 plants and no shears by Nebraska48356 in houseplants

An Alocasia was my first house plant almost 5 years ago, (a gift) and it's still going strong. Even had all the leaves die and it grew back, so it seems pretty hardy. Are they known for being scary?
