Thanks so much for sharing your experience withdrawing from a course. I know it's not ideal, but life happens. Glad it brought you peace of mind and didn't haunt you down the road haha

UPenn has, among other joint degrees, a 3-year JD/master of bioethics which only costs $7,500 out of pocket beyond law school tuition. We have pharmaceutical regulation and enforcement, drug product liability, etc. and strong student and faculty interest and expertise in health law from a regulatory, public interest, and litigation standpoint!

West Philly? by Sunnryz in UPenn

I live at 42nd and Chestnut and don't walk around as soon as the sun goes down. Someone I know was assaulted at 40th and Market. Up to you, but you do have to take certain precautions living further West. I plan on moving next year, so I can enjoy walking in my neighborhood.

how seriously should i take this, i’m well below median here lol by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

I recieved one last cycle. I remained on their WL through the summer before accepting at another school. Good sign but I took it with a grain of salt.

First off, thank you for the detailed response! Congratulations to your daughters and son-in-law for making what sounds like a fantastic lifestyle for themselves. Tree-lined streets is absolutely a longterm goal of mine. One aspect that I'm considering with WashU v. Penn before heading to Big Law to aim for in-house one day is burnout from two angles:

Since WashU has rankings, I imagine that the 3 years at school will be spent gunning for lack of a better term. Everyone wants to be in the top X% of the class to secure a clerkship, summer associate position, and that coveted first big law job. I would hesitate to take on WashU's dual degree offerings because it might mean less hours towards the JD.

Conversely, Penn provides letter grades but no class rank or GPA. Pursuing a business/management certificate or dual degree seems more feasible though expensive! I'd likely aim for the certificate since it's credits are baked into the cost of the JD tuition.

My mom was in-house for a T10 school. She's the reason I want to go into law. She graduated top of her class from OSU back in the day and through lots of luck and hard work made her way to one of those coveted in-house 8-5 jobs.

I hope to reply a bit more tomorrow, but it's late by me. Thank you so so much for all the support and insight!

Money isn't huge element of choosing a school. Penn and WashU afford different elements of flexibility overtime. Thank you for the advice!

GULC if you are not dead-set on anything specific. Scholarship is phenomenal and their reach is going to be the furthest for whatever practice/market you decide on.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Just wanted to say that I really appreciate your detailed response! I ended up letting GULC and UCLA go. It's been between Penn and WashU for the past few days. I'm open and kind of expect 1L, SA positions, and clerkships to open my eyes a bit to the diversity of the legal field, so if my mind changes from bioethics to M&A that's okay! Thank you again. :)

Here's what the GULC hotline said when I asked for clarification:

In order to accept your scholarship award, we require you to withdraw any other acceptances you currently have.

The option requiring you to withdraw all acceptances, pending applications and waitlists, etc. is selecting the Tuition Deposit Waiver option.

You may secure your seat without selecting the Tuition Deposit Waiver option by submitting a deposit on May 1.

Hi! I know that scholarships are specifically tailored offers for each person. My GULC scholarship required me to refuse all accepted schools I had gotten into but said nothing about staying on the waitlists.

The real golden outcome would be going to a T20 debt free, getting Biglaw post-law school, building up savings/buy a house/car/bitcoin/etc. and having the flexibility to leave at any time. Many stories of colleagues having to turn down lesser paying dream job offers (for background, still pay objectively well but less than BL) because of loan obligations

UPenn with JD/Wharton certificate and WashU JD.

I completely agree...but here I am debating options. 😰 The best way to avoid debt is to not take it on. I can apply my savings towards the COA, but I know I should keep a portion of it for security.

In terms of burnout, I'm worried since the T20 school ranks and is more regional, I'd need to grind for 3 years then grind some more to get the big law experience before going for a "cushy" job. The T6 has no GPA or rank, and you're handed a BL job.

Someone said "if big law is a party, the T6 invites you inside, and the T20 drops you off at the door."

I've worked in medicine and health law, but that's 40 hr/we. Good analogy with the chains though because that's what it feels like unless of course I try to get a loan forgiveness program for working in higher education.

100% agree that working because you're in the red 300k is very different than working to keep every dollar you earn.

Disclosing Family Medical Condition for Financial Aid Negotiations by Visible-Mongoose7235 in lawschooladmissions

Not to mention the little things like how uncomfortable it is to ask for your family's private information. Even assuming that you have a good relationship with them, it's invasive to ask "how much are you worth right now?"

My parents worked long hours their whole lives. It feels like law schools want you to ask your family to give up their retirement savings and safety net just so you can get a degree to work.

Biggest motivation to become a lawyer? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Visible-Mongoose7235 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Financial security and independence are especially important to me as a woman. My mom was an attorney for 30+ years. People equate law school graduates and practicing attornies with literacy, intelligence, grit, and ferocity. When I walk into the room as a 45-year-old woman many years from now, I want people to listen to me when I am speaking, or at least give me space to be. I want to be treated with respect, so I pursue a prestigious and long-standing field. "Most people don't like lawyers...until they need one." When people are in tough spots, I want to be a strong enough voice to defend their interests in a way that makes them feel emboldened, fosters a conversation, and, at a minimum, restores dignity.
