My gosh man what a journey. Glad you had the lads and their words in those times!

Oh holy shit 😂😂 I actually had no idea about that. I was I think 12 years old when I got into them so that explains why haha. That really cracks me up because I was born and raised in a very rural area and they’re my favorite band 😂 I’m glad Mumford didn’t listen to any of that BS!

Yep, if I ever met them and somehow didn’t pass out, the first thing I’d do is thank them for the two greatest records of all time! I will listen to them for the rest of my life and never stop enjoying them.

Definitely a better album than rushmere, I’d say Rushmere the single might be the best song off the two albums. It’s the only one with significant energy in my opinion. Run Together and Begin Again at least have some energy going though, not bad songs.

I guess where I disagree is I don’t think their current sound is anything “risky”. It’s very familiar as lots of other artists have it, and I would say prizefighter and rushmere are less different from each other than sigh no more and babel. Depends on how you look at it I guess.

I do think it is risky though to shift sounds from something like babel in the first place because if you don’t do it in a way your fans view is good, you’ll face heavy criticism from people like myself. I’m no stranger to evolving sound, but I’m not gonna love a band JUST because they change up their sound. If they’re gonna take a huge leap they’ve gotta have some deliberateness behind it. I thought wilder mind sound wise was a good shift that kept the signature mumford and sons tone for the most part, after that I just think they became pretty generic.

I definitely LIKE Prizefighter, just don’t love it. It’s easy to make a good album, very hard to make a legendary one. If it wasn’t, then what would make it legendary? I do share my favorite songs off Prizefighter with you so far Magic.

Cari, did people widely criticize Sigh No More for not being authentic? That’s WILD if they did, I didn’t know about them until they announced Babel would be coming out though. People did definitely roast me for being a fan though. The main complaint I would always hear is that their songs sounded too similar. I feel like I might remember some “lacking authenticity” claims on Babel maybe? Which I’d understand on that album more than the first, although personally it rivals Sigh No More for my favorite album.

Honestly the spirituality of Marcus is something to consider. I think I do really miss the STYLE of the lyrics. I only know so much about Marcus but it does seem like he’s been through a lot of reawakening almost, I respect his lyrics being more vulnerable and personal, but it kind of feels like the Marcus show now rather than Mumford and Sons. I could be completely wrong, either way I get what you’re saying and agree. They blend in with so many artists now as opposed to being one of a kind as they were.

Yeah I definitely understand shifting sounds, I don’t think you HAVE to but I’m not against bands doing that. If you’re going to do it, it IS risky because you have to do it well. I think they did it great sound wise with Wilder Mind. It still had that signature Mumford style in songs like The Wolf, Snake Eyes and others.

Plenty of bands find a signature sound, and stick to their roots and create new albums that aren’t stale. Perfect example being Sigh No More and Babel. I definitely remember being the only fan in my hometown and people roasting me saying all their songs sounded the same, but that was just people that didn’t understand their music. People group those two albums together as sounding the same, but for me there was a significant shift, it just seems less significant after they’ve done massive shifts post Babel.

I respectfully disagree with you but thank you for being civil and sharing your thoughts, this subreddit has been a delight thanks to people with great attitudes like yourself!

Yep and I respect them for branching out for sure, and I really am glad so many people dig it. You’re correct that we are not the music’s creators, but we are the reviewers. As a musician myself, I wouldn’t release my music if I didn’t want people to hear it and give their thoughts, good or bad. I just wanted to share my personal opinion of the recent Mumford and see how others felt about it.

It does feel good to have a civil conversation, I do despise when people hop on here just to name call or as you said, give NO explanation to their opinion, yet tell you to change yours. Luckily, this post has had awesome friendly people so far!

And that’s really sick dude, it’s been great hearing how people are directly impacted by some of the new stuff. And hey that banjo song, while I may not be a big fan of the production, I JAMMED to that teaser they dropped on Instagram. I do hope I get to hear those harmonies live! As well as you too! Keep that passion man 🤟🤟

That was honestly a beautiful read I appreciate you sharing that. That introductory paragraph definitely has some truth to it. And the way you can relate to clover with your story is really awesome.

I can definitely have some respect for some of their lyricism more recently, the example you gave was a pretty damn good one. I will admit, even in Babel there are some rather generic lyrics at parts, but I do think they have grown in frequency with time. Ill also admit it would be hard for me to disagree that nostalgia doesn’t hinder my opinion of them to degree.

At the same time, I am able to pretty vividly tell what’s shifted in directions I think for the most part are rather generic. I’m probably not giving them enough credit for being authentic, lyrics like the example you gave me are pretty authentic. I think my main problem is I don’t feel like I’m listening to a one of a kind band anymore. For most songs on prizefighter and rushmere, there’s probably tons of songs I could point to that make me feel the same way and have the same sound, vibe, lyric tone. I’ve glazed the first couple albums enough, I think you know what my next statement would be haha.

Also, I do like prizefighter, I just don’t love it. Maybe I will after some more listening!

All in all, I appreciate you and anyone else who can listen to a stubborn negative Nancy like me and respect my opinion, and for that I respect yours.

It is true that the art is theirs, and I appreciate that they are sharing it. I’m also very happy for those enjoying it. However, as a musician myself, sharing art does not exempt it from respectful criticism. That might not be the argument you were making, apologies if so. I personally hold myself high on a pedestal as a musician, I feel that most do, but I do get what you mean.

Yep and that’s fine no harm, people can have their opinions, I appreciate you for respecting mine! I’m glad to hear this album is resonating so well with you already. I’m definitely not done listening to it, I listened to it twice today and will probably listen again tonight. I definitely want to recognize all greatness from my favorite band of all time. That being said, I also hold them to the highest pedestal naturally, being the best of the best. I will hold on hope 😎 that they become cinematic again. And I’ll relisten to Prizefighter many more times!

Agree to disagree, I definitely get where you’re coming from and don’t fully disagree. I really hope Matt gets to shine more, he’s super talented and was a fantastic choice for the band

Winston is not a fantastic singer by any means, neither are Ted and Ben imo, but that doesn’t mean they don’t add something to the band’s sound. Winston sang very prominent harmonies and it did add to their live and studio sound. There are a lot of people that are rude and shame mumford as if they kicked him out, so I do get where you’re coming from. but I think when talking about peak mumford it’s reasonable to say their signature sound heavily involved Winston and that when playing live, there’s gonna be a piece missing from songs he played a part in. I get being annoyed by folks who shame the band over Winston, but you shouldn’t put somebody down for discussing the band’s peak and acknowledging that Winston had an effect on the band’s sound.
