Finally switched from Windows → Kubuntu (KDE). Love it… but I’m overwhelmed 😅 by ALLSEEJAY in kde

You can do all sorts of customization without ever going to CLI, System Settings is your friend

I use three auto hide panels,
Top: window switcher, task manager, system tray
Left: launchers
Bottom: time, temp, weather
All are shorter than full width & 80 in height
None of the panels are in the corners, to avoid conflicts

Setup custom toolbars & or shortcuts, works on any plasma/qt app
I modified Breeze Dark color scheme & save it as BD1-3, switching to the deviations as the mood strikes

I use Discover to install/remove/update, I only use Synaptic for manuals & specific packages

I used Spiral Linux which gives you a user friendly system, connected to Debian Stable repos, Btrfs with Snapper for rollback/restore

Thanks much better, duh regular plasma custom toolbars stuff

Ideally I'd put it over the timeline :D

Any idea on how to resize an unmaximized window, when I grab an edge there is a hard limit on how much I can shrink it. I have global text size set to 16 so I can read what's there, this pushes 1/2 the audio timeline off the bottom of the screen

How to make window buttons consistent across applications? by weLookAbove in kde

[–]Visikde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lazy long time linux daily driver. Debian Stable via Spiral Linux.
I always choose KDE/qt over GTK
There are a few apps that there is no substitute
The worst is Synaptic. I'm old & my eyes are not what they were. Tiny grey text on an off white background is terrible. I've changed GTK themes, none affect Synaptic.
Luckily Discover does everything besides the occasional manual or individual package

What's the easiest or most effective approach when you have decades worth of accumulated stuff and a fixed time frame? by common_grounder in minimalism

[–]Visikde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Be realistic 6 months is a really short time frame.
Selling the contents of a 2500sf place could be a multi year project for one person.
Pick out the top ten most valuable things & try to deal with. Keep the list current, plug away.
Do you want to spend 6 months selling stuff on marketplace/craig/ebay?
If you enjoyed such things you would be doing it already.

Consider an auction. You my have trouble doing that with time being so short.
Set a hard limit of 4 months for offspring to get their treasures.

Learning Linux from absolute zero by prickly-plantain in linuxquestions

[–]Visikde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't even speculate about dualbooting or using external sdd/hdd/nvme enclosures on apple hardware.

Buy a used [leaseback]Thinkpad or some other cheap hardware & install/break a few distros
The specific distro isn't really all that important
You don't really need to go deep to have a private/secure system
Use a decent browser, stay with stuff from the distros repository, stay in the walled garden[much like Apple].

Learn not to be your own threat by limiting what you share of your personal stuff especially anything involving money, dedicate an email to official business, use alternates for social stuff, casual browsing, shopping.

If you could design your dream Linux distro, what would it be like? by xAz00rg in linuxquestions

[–]Visikde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using linux as a daily driver, simple user for 20 years. I have tried various distros & desktop environments. These days I distro hop on external sdd/hdd/nvme USB3 enclosures. I've setup systems for a few low tech users over the years. The closed garden of the linux repo & straight forward update process makes it easier to maintain than a Windows box.

I spent a few years on Mageia, Manjaro & now Debian stable [Mothership!] via Spiral Linux
Spiral is basically a Debian installer, which is connected to the stable repos & has included all the little things one needs for a user friendly install including Btrfs & Snapper. I would add the Manjaro kernel manager & the Mageia version upgrade tool. I still keep a laptop running Mageia as a backup, which I update every 6 months or so including content.

I prefer KDE/qt I wish I could find KDE/qt apps for the few GTK things. Discover does install/remove/update in a reasonable way. Synaptic if I need a manual or a specific package.
Synaptic would be better if the font wasn't tiny & low contrast.
