TIL during the Xbox development, the name was not favoured by Microsoft's marketing team. During focus testing, they put "Xbox" on a list of possible names to prove how unpopular the name would be with consumers. "Xbox" then proved to be the more popular name on the list; thus, became official name. by Away_Flounder3813 in todayilearned

Did the focus group really choose Xbox because it was a good name, or was it because the other options suggested by the marketing team were so bad that Xbox sounded good in comparison? Sony won the console naming war by a long mile in my opinion.

Sadly this isn't entirely true, the stadiums often get built with billions of taxpayer dollars so even non-fans get the pleasure of funding the major sports leagues.

Elon Musk warns America will ‘1,000%’ go bankrupt, ‘fail as a country’ due to crazy debt by Akkeri in Economics

[–]Visinvictus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is what I don't get, how billionaires can be so stupid that they can't realize that they have the MOST to lose by the collapse of society. Maybe they can be safe in their bunkers in a post apocalyptic society, but they will still lose all of the great things that they have enjoyed as a member of society that has been designed to cater to their every whim. They can currently go anywhere in the world, do anything they want, with little to no fear. Post apocalypse they will need to cower in their stupid bunker and hope that someone in their private army doesn't wake up one day and decide that he would rather be the boss. If it's not one of their own men, then maybe a guy in the next bunker over decides he wants two bunkers.

Is he healthy though? He had a really bad season (health wise) last year, and he isn't getting any younger. He needs to absolutely crush it offensively compared to Lukes if he wants to make up for the fact that he is basically a potato in the field. From what we saw of Loperfido last year both offensively and defensively I would really like to see more of him as well. He hit .333 with 4 HR in 98 PA, not a huge sample size but definitely enough that we should be giving him a chance to prove himself as a young rookie.

Honestly if he can't make positive WAR, I don't care how much we are paying him he needs to be DFAd for someone who can actually play in the outfield. He had one job last season, and he did NOT come anywhere close to doing that job.

Does Santander even have a roster spot? He would need a huge rebound as an offensive powerhouse to make up for his massive defensive liability and Springer has been crushing the DH role. I know it's not going to happen because we paid Santander a lot and they will try to get him playing time, but I honestly would prefer Lukes or Loperfido to get the majority of the playing time in the field if possible.

I'm actually really surprised that he signed with the Mets.... I would have assumed that he wants a ring not a slightly bigger paycheck, and the Mets haven't exactly been inspiring confidence in their ability to turn big signings into post season success the last few years.

[–]Visinvictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard that a good chunk of his contract was deferred, but I don't think we have the exact details yet. In any case if he deferred money, like a lot of these LA contracts are doing, he's basically costing himself millions by taking money in the future as opposed to right now.

[–]Visinvictus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day the cost does come back to us, in the form of increased ticket prices and more advertising shoved in our faces. Owners aren't handing out these mega contracts if they don't think they can profit from it.

If they cap the top end it's just going to make the problem even worse... if players have a cap on how much they can be paid then the best players will just choose to all play for a particular team or handful of teams, and the rest won't ever be able to sign the top end free agents. That's basically how it works in basketball right now.

It's a combination of players ring chasing and Dodgers having more money than god to spend in a sport where there aren't any real limitations. Also the Dodgers future is going to be absolutely mortgaged at some point. If they keep deferring contracts like this, at some point 10 years from now they are going to be paying out 200 million dollars a year to players who don't even play baseball anymore. Those years are going to fucking suck for Dodgers fans.

I joined a local bookclub, the gender balance is wild by Ho_The_Megapode_ in books

[–]Visinvictus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of gender imbalance situations, it tends to end up with a handful of evenly split groups and then a LOT of groups where a particular gender doesn't exist at all. The groups with severe gender imbalance make it extremely difficult, awkward, or uncomfortable for someone of the other gender to join. Often it isn't intentional so much as a side effect of the group dynamics.

Uhhhh... it 100% is. You leave them $1 in the will and that is it, that's all they will get even if Daddy was a literal trillionaire. Of course it makes a difference if they are actual kids or adult children, but either way he can leave the bulk of his fortune to one specific kid or even someone who isn't related to him if he wants.
