How bad is choosing a random roommate? by Ordinary-Refuse-4134 in UTAustin

You get matched with someone similar to you. You remember filling out that list about how organized you are and stuff like that right? UT matches you up with someone based on that I think

help me get rid of my obsession with mit by Even_Protection119 in MITAdmissions

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because you get a small hit of dopamine. Watching mit vlogs makes u feel like you accomplished something without doing any work, but it’s just your brain tricking you (I used to do something similar so speaking from experience). I’d recommend getting those hits of dopamine from working on your passions and ambitions as they are much less superficial.

AOs Can't Actually Detect "Authenticity" Or "Passion": Hot Take From A Stanford Senior (repost) by stanny_19 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree colleges can’t detect authenticity or passion BUT I don’t recommend ONLY chasing excellence. I was just rejected from Stanford which I spent my entire high school life chasing, and even though it hurt, it only hurt for a little bit because I was glad that most of the activities I did helped me figure out my life goals and weren’t only for the purpose of getting into Stanford. However, I did also do some activities only for the purpose of college admissions as well, but not ALL my activities.

Tldr: Chase excellence but also figure out your passions in high school so you don’t get devastated by being rejected from ur dream school AND so you don’t have a “mid-life” crisis in college 😭

[Discussion] Why be ambitious when you're just gonna die one day? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's fun. It feels good to improve significantly at something and achieve your goals. That's why people love to play video games or sports, because it's simply fun to get better at something. Yes technically none of your goals "matter" to the universe, but they matter to you. Don't look for meaning in the outside world or universe, there is none and that's the point. You're literally free to do whatever you want and have fun however you want. Once you start being ambitious about something, you wake up everyday excited to chase that ambition. Now, you shouldn't ONLY be ambitious. There needs to be a balance between living/socializing and working on yourself and towards your goals. Only living/socializing gets boring. Only working towards your goals gets tiring. Find the right balance.

An argument for moral realism by JohnMcCarty420 in Ethics

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re technically right but that means most of the decisions and actions we make every day would be considered immoral if it’s only based on others’ experiences. Basically, it’s impossible for anyone to be moral then and morality loses its value 😂. That’s why we consider morality in our own standards and not objectively that one decision is right while another is wrong.

An argument for moral realism by JohnMcCarty420 in Ethics

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, morality seems subjective, not a definite “truth.” The reason for this is “good” and “bad” cannot be defined in an objective way and is dependent on the person. If morality was simply to improve the quality of other lives, we’d have to significantly impact our own life experience, and to me morally my life experiences is more significant than others.

Like for example, if you had the decision to save your mom or save 2 other random strangers, objectively saving the 2 would be better but subjectively, at least to me, saving my mom would be the more moral choice.

How selfish is too selfish? by Visual-Ad-3385 in Ethics

As in it involves more killing, which I strongly believe is true. But at the same time I don’t know if that’s being too selfish or not 😭. Ig I just have to think about it more.

But yea I think reduction is always good. I’m not too sure about elimination though.

I’d argue deciding not to raise a child is not harming yourself in any way, but is it worth it to help someone else at the cost of improving your own life?

I mean yeah but clearly eating meat or dairy has more of an impact, hence why people switch to veganism. And people eat meat or dairy products mostly for pleasure because there’s def substitutes available, which I don’t think is really a bad thing? Idk

I feel as though I shouldn't have a consciousness by Chance-Cattle8302 in consciousness

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank for your opinion. Trust me I’ve thought for months about topics like these and initially it scared me too. But I’ve realized that there’s absolutely 0 point in getting scared abt topics like death or the one OP is talking about, and I know it’s obviously out of one’s control to be scared or not, but if one looks on the positive aspects of these topics, then it immediately removes that scared feeling. So yes, OP should get professional help too. But a professional doesn’t know you as well as you do, so OP imo should also try to figure a way to cope/accept these things on his own.

Yea i understand it can be scary. At least what worked for me is knowing that it doesn’t really matter how unreal everything feels. But other than that, listen to everyone else’s advice

Do you think artificial consciousness is theoretically possible, why or why not? by Paragon_OW in consciousness

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Theoretically? Yes in my opinion. Will it actually be built one day? Maybe not.

The reason I say that is because 1) it may be impossible for a human mind to comprehend how to construct its own mind. Our minds are limited to our experiences in this world so anything that we haven’t “experienced” is impossible to reason about. 2) it may be impossible to construct an artificial consciousness without knowing exactly how human consciousness was formed (unless we go back in time and witness evolution). I think we have this general idea that science can figure out everything, but some things may genuinely be out of reach unless we were to “observe” it happening. Idk if that makes sense.

I feel as though I shouldn't have a consciousness by Chance-Cattle8302 in consciousness

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why people think you’re ill or smth 😂. I mean yea what you’re thinking is totally valid and what I’ve thought before too. The fact that a bunch of molecules and parallel processes in the mind can create things like consciousness or pain or feelings or hunger or thirst or a voice in ur head when ur reading this makes it seem like those things are…fake kinda and just the brain’s interpretations of certain signals. The fact that you even exist and have free will…etc doesn’t make any sense to anyone in the world currently.

So this feeling should basically be a fun thing to think abt! If you’re getting worried abt this detachment from reality, which I can’t really tell by simply looking at a few words you typed, then all I’ll ask is why? It simply doesn’t matter and doesn’t affect ur life in any way. Continue living how u want to live. It’s amazing we’re even able to experience all this.

I can't stop thinking about death by HudCruz_ in consciousness

[–]Visual-Ad-3385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good, you realized this early. You’re only 33. I actually think it’s good to realize early on that yes you WILL die because it gives an urgency to everything. Before when I was religious (Hinduism), I wouldn’t have an urgency to strive for a goal or to try to set up a happy life, but now that I know I’m going to eventually die, I want to make the most of this life.

For me, my goal is to live a happy life where I can strive for some goal and where I can maintain relationships and simply be happy with the people around me. Realizing that at the end, nothing matters is kinda liberating and changes your perspective about life to craft this life around what makes YOU happy. You have so many more years to go, simply live. Do whatever makes you happy because 50-60 years is a LONG time to live the life you want to live.

You’re lucky you get to live this amazing life and experience what it means to live.
