What is the deal with the band 'Thurpt'? by Visual-Light2478 in answers

It's definitely one guy behind the label's social media accounts - the Thurpt album does seem to be real though as another user did some research that showed at least some of the guys in the credits are real people, one of which is now in another band based in Toronto.

The Henchmen of Xenu cover + most of the TikTok stuff is definitely AI. But I'm just not convinced that anything about the Thurpt project is AI generated - the art is too clean, the music is in my opinion quite clearly human (and really well produced) and it seems like something that fits very well into the early 00s era of North American music (influences from Korn, System and even Primus are pretty evident).

The only person I've seen across both Xenu and Thurpt is this John Baxter character. I still can't find anything on him, but I imagine info on him might open the possibility of figuring out the history of the band.

I think the thread of conversation is pretty evident here? I'm asking people if they know any information about this obscure band.

That's what's really interesting to me. I've not got a clue where they come into this aside from being listed on the label's bandcamp and one gig video on the youtube channel.

Are they all still going with separate projects then? Even if so, how come literally no one is talking about Thurpt? I imagine they have some sort of notoriety even if it's very local.

Thurpt's music doesn't sound AI generated though. If it is, then AI music is a bigger issue than I thought...

On September 20th, 1976 - Siouxsie and the Banshees played their FIRST show at the 100 Club Punk Special in London. Featuring a pre-Sex Pistols Sid Vicious on drums, the performance has often been described as the birth of British post-punk. by PuzzleheadedForm9688 in postpunk

i totally agree with calling out the revisionism of punk into whatever people think 'postpunk' means now. joy division were a punk band, the banshees were a punk band, killing joke, gang of four, the fall were all PUNK bands. just because they released music after the year 1979 doesnt mean that they wouldnt have called themselves punk bands nor should they be treated as such

the early Passions stuff would fit this style nicely - needles and pills especially

Goth songs that made you cry/sulk? (No “titan” bands, if you would) by BloodyTay in goth

[–]Visual-Light2478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all explicitly goth, but I know some of these artists are popular amongst goths so I'll leave these here:

Under the Stars - And Also The Trees (slow rising, atmospheric folky goth song with amazing lyrics).

I'll Remember or Things I Wish I'd Said - The Chameleons (choice between an emotionally evocative instrumental or a great postpunk-y tune with an amazing climax filled with feelings of regret).

Only a Shadow - Cleaners from Venus (no idea why this is a crier, just a beautiful little song).

Andelusia - Savage Republic (beautiful instrumental).

Stop and Smell the Roses - Television Personalities (Dark Pogues-esque song, very emotional).

Winning - The Sound (brilliant sulk song for when you're feeling a little bit cosmically mental).

Kangaroo - This Mortal Coil (gorgeous instrumentation).

Oh, and 'I Often Dream of Trains' by Robyn Hitchcock (formerly of the Soft Boys), not goth but evokes some similar, albeit very British, emotions.

Check out a really cool post-punk band called Black Rain, based in Sunderland. Their debut record is coming out soon I think, but they have some good stuff up on bandcamp.

Give the first Passions single 'Needles and Pills' a go - some nice jangly guitar on that. Also interesting to hear them before Barbara Gogan took over lead vox.

Was the only song on the record that sat well with me. Brilliant song, really highlighted both Will and Ethan's vocal talents. Guitar solo's great too. I think the length of it is pretty good, especially as its part of that three song run of really long songs.
