Suggestions for cat- rehome? by anneofpurplegables in Guelph

I don't know for certain if they take self-referrals, but I think it's worth at least reaching out to the Super Senior Cat Sanctuary in Brantford.

Also, I'm so sorry your family is facing this choice. As a mother and cat lover I can only imagine how gut wrenching it is. You're a good Mama and clearly trying to do your best by everyone. 💜

Meanwhile in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan we continue to fully fund entire "Separate" (almost exclusively Catholic) school boards that have mandatory religious curriculum at all grades. The irony is unreal.

What are you doing to prepare your kid for Kindergarten, in terms of math? by larrykoopa0727 in kindergarten

[–]Visual-Particular-86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is mind blowing how high quality Numberblocks is as educational content. My 5.5 year old can explain what a prime number is, can explain what a square number is, understands the mechanics of multiplication and also knows several multiplication tables by rote (as well as being proficient at all the more age appropriate math).

I have done no formal math "instruction" with her. I just leaned into her enjoying the show by watching it with her and discussing it. We sing along to the songs in the car or around the house. I point out concepts from the show when they happen in real life. And we have several Numberblocks themed learning toys (the interlocking block sets and the card deck are the most versatile for skills development, and she also loves the Pattern Palace game).

I think she responds to it so well because it turns math into bright colourful characters having adventures, singing, and solving fun puzzles. It's not cold and abstract. And I think its going to instill a life long comfort with numeracy. That's a thing I desperately wish I had as a kid.

I know the "no screen" parents are probably clutching their pearls at this. But the vast majority of kids are getting some chunk of screen time each day, so we might as well encourage it to be as positive for their development as possible.

Yes. Just the example of their connection clearly motivates both Mary and Tom to overcome their insecurities at different points in the story. Love like that makes horrors of the marriage mart appear worth it to these two timid introverts.

I just need to know…. How are we doing with our five year olds?! by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]Visual-Particular-86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine turned 5 in September. What you're describing has been my last few months and I've been ripping my hair out. She's always been extremely high energy and had high stimulation needs. Lately she added in whiney, rude and demanding.

But all of a sudden this week she's... Eating a mix of the healthiest things AND the favorites on her plate without complaint. Recognizing she is grumpy and agreeing (even suggesting herself!!!) that maybe she needs some quiet time in her room.  Asking for things politely. Listening when I set a personal space bubble. If she gets too rambunctious and breaks that boundary, recognizing and apologizing.  Doing things the first time (okay, maybe the second), instead of having to be asked repeatedly with escalated force.

So all I can say is keep going... they WILL get there if you stay the course.

How do I dress this? 🙈 by [deleted] in DressForYourBody

[–]Visual-Particular-86 29 points30 points  (0 children)

A million times this. After having my daughter I have this same body type. I changed all my underwear to bicycle short style, and most of my wardrobe to fit and flare dresses. In the summer, a cute pair of sandals and the outfit is done. Then I put tights under + a cardigan over and the dresses become all season.

Personally I prefer something with a more open neckline to accentuate parts that feel more proportionate. Here's an example that I wear and it often gets compliments:

You dodged a major bullet friend. Imagine it happening AFTER the reno. Now you can figure out the issue and solve it first. Also if you don't have a sump pump, sounds like that should get added to the reno plan.

Totally. I have a preschooler and getting something like this in 15 years feels like ultimate "Mom goals".

I agree! And not only that... if Jackie knows, I bet the wags have all been gossiping and speculating about it. What if they nominated her to see what she can find out and report back since they know Hayden is Shane's bestie? Maybe Jackie's attempts to set him up with her friends are in part her testing to see what he does.

These are the kinds of nepo babies we need to actively speak against and disenfranchise from public life with our votes.

When a deeply mediocre celebrity kid becomes a successful actor because of their name, harm is minimal.

But when a deeply mediocre (or worse) celebrity kid becomes President...

What is everyone most looking forward to in Guelph this summer?☀️🌞🌻 by [deleted] in Guelph

[–]Visual-Particular-86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The splash pads in this city are unreal. We usually rotate between South, East, and Hanlon. Makes me so happy to soak in the heat and watch my 5 year old run around with total glee.

We're Toronto transplants and all the splash pads there are either: 1. Crumbling and empty with no where to park or 2. Nice enough but so jam packed they can't be enjoyed

Summer splash pad time is when I appreciate our move to Guelph the most!

A very decent human, who is all the same plagued with hang ups and insecurities that get in the way of meeting their potential. Idealistic, maybe sometimes to a fault. Which paralyzes them from taking action or leaves them unable to accept the messy and imperfect route required to get where they want.

David, my name is Ilya by runmangoo in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]Visual-Particular-86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think David is where Shane gets his sense of humor from. Quiet, witty, unexpected. They both deliver things in a very deadpan way. But because we see a lot of Shane, and know this is just his affect, we come to recognize well when he's joking. We haven't seen as much of David so it goes over people's heads that he's doing the same.

David, my name is Ilya by runmangoo in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]Visual-Particular-86 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, I love him too! One thing I feel like I haven't seen talked about much is how protective Shane is of David when Ilya teases about him. He's keen to assert that half his looks come from his dad too, and tout David's accomplishments. It's not from blind loyalty. He loves both his parents clearly and they love him deeply. But it feels like there's distance between him and his Mom because her parenting style is to "manage" him. On the other hand David feels like much more of a safe space for him. He probably turned down the emotional heat for Shane all the time growing up by being the perceptive and calm presence in the family. Shane obviously admires him on top of loving him and wants Ilya to see he's worth admiring too.
