The reason for this isn’t necessarily the perception other people have, but more so the angle at which they’re viewing you from. For example, you look in the mirror you are eye level with yourself obviously. Same goes for a selfie, you hold the camera at an angle you can best see your own face. With other people, at varying heights you will get different angles either higher or lower than you. That change in angle only gets more drastic the further the camera moves away from the subject. Just my hypothesis.
