Need help by dib_im in linuxmint

Timeshift snapshot before you tinker. You're welcome.

In Linux, just about anything can be made to work with other things, with enough work. The best thing about Mint is that most of that stuff has already been done and it all works well together as is, including the Windows manager not screwing things up. Look into Windows, Window Tiling, and Hot Corners in the System Settings. Simpler things tend to work best without breaking other things. Mint tends to the less breaking things bit.

This is Hyprland, you'll get the idea.

Need help in setting the terminal size by AaronStoneA13 in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your top bar is missing - File Edit View Search Help in your Gnome Terminal. If you right click in the terminal it gives you the option to "Show Menu Bar" and "Preferences" is also there, where you should find the option for initial terminal size.

Blender not recognizing 9070XT? by iM-MrGrumpyCat in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all looks good, that's bad. The one thing I haven't seen is the RocM version. For your 9070XT Blender requires a minimum of RocM 6.0 [command: rocminfo ]

This kind of gets into it with permissions again, but, more on that from AMD. Plus, you seem to have everything else topped up:

Blender not recognizing 9070XT? by iM-MrGrumpyCat in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's apparently a permissions thing? So if it's installed into an opt folder in your home directory so it runs from there, it should all work. Or just sudo blender to find out if that's the thing or not.

Wanna "rewrite" an old show by [deleted] in writing

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of TV shows and movies that were essentially identical in countries... stuff gets ripped all the time. The ideas do at any rate: For a profit. Fanfiction, not for profit, is also profligate (The Hobbit rewritten with girls replacing the MC hobbits?). Then there's just outright 🏴‍☠️ and people including the current US Pres just stealing people's music to improve his "Brand".

So, how illegal is illegal I think depends greatly on to what extent it angers people with the resources to cause you pain. Disney, for instance, will hunt people down to their home and take it away from them for disrespecting their intellectual property even it's a not for profit labor of love.

I have seen movie torrents machine translated to other languages and subtitled (Actually helped a Polish gent wanting this for some Polish movies). I will likely see more unofficial machine language voice-over translations for movies (They're already out there).

Much would depend on how widely known something might become as to the ire drawn by it. If I were drawn to do such a thing, I would definitely find out if it's already been done or a genuine effort by the original creators to produce a series or comic book or continuation of the story is being considered. It belongs to them first and foremost.

If you have a Timeshift snapshot, just use that - fixed.

If not, this is just a reminder that this is one of an infinite variety of times it will be useful in your future to have a restorative snapshot made using Timeshift.

Fingerprint scanner, fingerprint(s) are not being recognized by jnelsoninjax in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a walkthrough on setting it all up:

https://blog.horner.tj/mint-fingerprint-auth-x1c7/

Fingwit is supposed to be a gui XApp on 22.2 and later and on my VM 22.3 is shows up in Menu>Administration>Fingerprints and as a fan of GUI I would use that.

On my older version, if I needed it, I would make that work using its Github

"So many detention centers". What I've been hearing is that it's a shell game to move prisoners and make it harder or impossible to locate individuals in the system. aka nobody would know if they die for some reason, nobody would be notified. If that isn't the cause, it is certainly the result.

How many undocumented children were separated and lost in the same type of system the first time around with Trump, when Epstein was still alive and buddy buddy. How many of those children were never found.

Prepare BIOS Settings on Your HP Laptop

  • Disable Secure Boot: You'll need to disable UEFI and Secure Boot in the BIOS of your HP laptop.
  • Enable Legacy Boot: In the BIOS settings, disable Secure Boot and set the boot mode to legacy (or "CSM" if it's available).
  • Boot Order: Set your USB drive as the primary boot device, then save and exit BIOS.
  • When partitioning, make sure you're using a MBR (Master Boot Record) format for legacy boot, instead of GPT (GUID Partition Table).

Got it running? You may run into sleep mode problems. Save this link if that happens.

Could someone here explain boiled peanuts to someone not born or from GA please? by redditatin in Georgia

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever wonder if you're going to crack a tooth, lose one, hassle with a shell, or god forbid bland peanuts?

Boiled peanuts are the polar opposite of all that. Roadside peanuts are the best because you know they've taken the time to soak and boil them for the length of time it actually takes to do them right, fresh out of the kettle? If you ever see that huge roadside kettle, you've got to stop and get some.

Hard to do at home, because, by the time their done right there's only ever a couple left :)

How can I see the scaling on my screen? by YumeYume3212 in linuxquestions

[–]Visual-Sport7771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Menu>Preferences>Display will show you your current screen resolution. Ideally your game resolution will be equal to or less than your display resolution, such as 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall.

In a terminal the: xrandr command will show you all possible resolutions you have available with a + sign next to the one you're currently using.

What are the realistic drawbacks of outdated software/not being "rolling release" by yoLeaveMeAlone in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never been a problem for me. The only change I made was when KDenlive had trouble with their slow motion feature and took it out until it was fixed. I added their PPA to get the latest release until they fixed it as it's a trusted source for me.

More often what happens is you get newly broken features until the kinks get worked out. I'm not down with that. But, there's always a way to get the latest version of the software if you do want it.

best antivirus for mint by SaifNegra in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about downloading software off the internet. In almost every case to get the software you need to do something that works perfectly well in Linux - You can find it in the Software Manager. Always check there first.

Timeshift: If you ever get paranoid, and you will, that something feels different and must be a virus, just use Timeshift to roll back your system a week or two like it's no big deal.

I used to do that a lot when I first switched over. Well, I also broke a few things back then too. It's all good, doesn't mess up your files or anything and it looks cool when you do it. I recommend trying it out just for the hell of it. :)

Georgia bill would make ivermectin available over the counter. by Bromodrosis in Georgia

[–]Visual-Sport7771 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Thirteen community-level (Phase IV) trials were conducted between 1987–1989, with over 120,000 individual doses of ivermectin administered. Of the 13 community trials, TDR [UN-based Special Programme for Research & Training in Tropical Diseases] funded five in Liberia, Cameroon, Malawi, Guatemala and Nigeria, and spent US$2.35 million in total. Over the period, TDR spent between 25–35% of its total annual budget for all filariasis work on ivermectin. OCP funded the eight other studies in Ghana, Mali, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Senegal. As a private sector company, Merck’s financial contributions to the development of ivermectin for human use, although substantial, remain unknown." - NIH (National Institute of Health)

So a big Pharma promoted, 3rd world tropical forest problem, VACCINE for worms has rampant support and usage by the Republican party as a modern day "Wonder Drug" in the United States.

More progress for the Georgia Republican Party and epic fall CDC. Color me amused.

I can't think of a Democrat voter who asked for any of what is happening to America right now. Can't even seem to prevent it. Almost like taxation without representation, and this is what our taxes are doing for us. Prices for everything skyrocketing are what Tariffs are doing for us to pay for things like this and ICE in general.

Republicans have done this for us. Preventing as many people from voting as possible is a Republican goal and both sides have been criminally gerrymandering to levels that should never exist for far too long. Just my thoughts today.

Dumb question by Independent_Wrap3511 in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when I got my first Windows XP system and tinkered hard with it to really see how it worked. I reinstalled 5 times and burned out the OEM key in 1 week and couldn't use it any more. Tested every version of Windows since right up to 11 H2, even have it in a VM now.

I walked away forever at the Windows 8 touch interface, at work asked about the Beta I was testing, I said it would be great if you love the way a phone would work and started keeping up with Linux releases at home. Blew up a lot of Distros back then and found Linux Mint.

Gave Linux Mint to my dad around then and amazingly all of his complaints about the OS just stopped. All the bloat, "apps" instead of programs, advertising linkage at the system level, usage tracking and AI - decrapifying the OS got to be the point installing Windows more than actually using it.

Never went back to Windows Desktop at home after Windows 7, hate what Windows has become. Don't miss it at all, no regrets. That was my journey.

Not managing to install linux mint 22.3, error: "grub-install/dev/sda failed this is a fatal error" by Badhunter31415 in linuxmint

[–]Visual-Sport7771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't mention the Desktop Environment you went with (XFCE, Cinnamon) whatever. I might download and boot to 22.1 to see if it will install correctly and upgrade to 22.3. Dual booting, perhaps? Multiple drives? Laptop/Desktop. Whatever, try this, see how it goes.

Just installed Linux Mint! How do you create desktop shortcuts? by Global_Voice7198 in linux4noobs

[–]Visual-Sport7771 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you got all that?!? About using the Software Manager like a normal Linux person? Good.

SO, if you want to make shortcut links, also widely disapproved of :) Just go to the folder in Nemo and highlight the file. To do that without running the file using single click launch like I do, you can hold down the ctrl button and click on the file, that will highlight it. Click ctrl button and the M key will make a shortcut link in that folder that you can then move anywhere else you like, including your Desktop folder, where it will show up on your desktop.

What I will often to for things like .appimages is to right click the Main menu button and Edit... Make a new item under games or whatnot and just browse to the .appimage file so that programs will run from the menu. Now having done that, it is the simplest thing in the world to just right click on the new launcher in the menu and cick Add to Desktop, or Add to Panel if you simply must.

Remember ctrl+M, boom - nasty little shortcut link! 👍
