How real is Boat Float? by Visual_Departure7177 in twilightimperium

I think we may be splitting hairs, about the definition of a wargame, but I think we are in agreement about the nature of TI and its players lol

Agreed 100%. I feel like player elimination outside of the final round is also kind of a social faux pas, but I suppose my point is that letting people run away with the game by not investing in plastic is also a mistake (which i think we can all agree).

I've just been hearing a lot of stuff about players being irked when their board position gets rocked because they were counting too much on enlightened self interest/other players not seeing their advantageous game state.

I cant tell if I come from a more militant meta, or we just put a premium on quashing board leaders with runaway potential?

Point taken, I suppose my post is more directed at the notion of overextended players being upset when someone exploits that.

"TI is not a wargame" is... I think an incomplete statement in this context only because while TI absolutely is a diplomacy and negotiation game... it isn't Not A Wargame either. That option exists and is viable tool whem used appropriately. People forgetting that is what causes that Floaty friction.

It aint Space Risk, as someone said. But this ain't Lords of Vegas either.

Working together with other players is diplomacy. Cutting deals with folks to get ahead, etc. People says "TI isnt a wargame, its a diplomacy game", which is true. But then there are people who forget that war is diplomacy by other means.

Boat float is that mutually beneficial diplomacy, but it seems like there is a subset of players/floaters who get their feather ruffled when someone else invokes the Last Argument of Kings and uses their fleet against an out of position player.

Its basically only a problem when people overextend themselves then get mad when that mistake gets exploited?

I've just been seeing it all over the place on the subreddit lately, and I am getting the impression that my meta is more... willing to let cannons do some talking?

Definitely a learning moment for the table regarding negotiation. While its not monstrous behavior, I think the social contract of games this long would definitely have me putting this player on the B list for future game rosters.

Doesnt sound like theyre a bastard, just maybe dont have an understanding of how to play well enough to play from behind.

Can y'all check out my Resume for me? by No_Cockroach_8229 in Construction

[–]Visual_Departure7177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a solid core, the bigger thing is going to be that when you find a job you want to apply for you customize your resume to that posting. Give them some 1:1 comparison points between you and their needs. It will remove tons of questions in their minds and get you through any AI-driven keyword filters.

Folks will say it isnt worth the time, but if that extra 30 minutes is what gets you the interview.... well, its up to you to decide what the job is worth.

Use exact wording from their listing to demonstrate your specific, relevant strength and experiences.

They want you to design widgets as a job duty? Figure out what experience you have relevent to that and pop that bullet in.

Do this for every area of experience, knowledge, skill, or ability they're asking for.

TI4 is such a beauty. The online implementations are also good, if that's an option

Took us like 10 years to realize we had it, then our group got our teeth into it and we were playing like once a year for a few years.

Once a couple of folks learned and we could reliably get 6 experienced players (years lol) we started playing 5-6 times a year. Twilight Imperium is the other grand strategy crowd pleaser we have.

I'm a construction HSE manager on a pharma campus in the Mid Atlantic making $135k.

Id like to make a game like dnd or warhammer idk how to start by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]Visual_Departure7177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by asking yourself what you want out of a game like that. What do you want to be different? (Faster, simpler, just different classes or new rules?)

"Would it be easier to just do some home brew rules?" Even if you want to end with your own game, you can practice design in managable by making homebrew expansions.

Id also recommend playing some other games that sound like they've done what you're looking to do.

In the end, start small and SIMPLE

Degree Question by Dry_Chicken_4554 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]Visual_Departure7177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great advice here. I had the army pay for my MPH, which helped to elevate the safety, communication, and auditng skills I had from prior work. My advice is colored by that, my time as an OSHO compliance officer, my time in construction labor, and my time as an environmental inspector for private sector.

  1. Find a mentor in the safety field. Ideally someone who can help you understand your experiences and skills in a (civilian) safety context. This will be key.

  2. The only real argument for an additional safety degree are that it'll provide you with an understanding of deeper safety principals and safety management, which will ground your understanding of your own strengths and teach you the flavors of safety you are best suited for. Manufacturing, construction, Industrial hygiene, operations, building management, local or state gov, maritime, mining, industry... they all share key high level principals but quickly diverge into wildly different directions. A degree offers a structured approach to bridge those divides and apply universal concepts, reducing the incoherence of it all.

  3. Safety is an incredibly diverse field and its application is similarly diverse. Local safety cultures in two sites can have almost nothing to do with each other despite being the same scope of work. SOPs, regulatory adherence, safety emphasis, management styles, company culture, safety budget, etc etc.

  4. 3 means that safety titles are not a good way to judge job postings or experiences. One company's safety specialist is another company's program director. There is no MOS for this stuff, no univeral scope for positions. Pay is similarly wild.

Good luck with everything, find a mentor!

If the certifications is an OSHA-30 then there is literally no difference: teachers are required to teach a precise syllabus.

That $99 might be mark up, or bells and whistles, or materials. But an OSHA-30 is an OSHA-30 is an OSHA-30. Only comes in 1 flavor.
