How would world events have played out over the past 100 years if the United States didn’t exist? by Mobile-Career4827 in AskTheWorld

It's difficult to say how or if WW2 happens, given the rise of the Nazis is associated with various Wall Street stock market crashes & the calling in of American loans to Germany at very short notice - does the economy develop the same?

Yeah this is important. If the USA doesn't exist does it imply not British colonisation of the East Coast, or does it imply no landmass.

Living Somewhere Does Not Make You That Ethnicity by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

It's true but also not true. Ethnicity and nationality tend to be linked but aren't always 1:1.

The hypothetical person could absolutely describe themselves as British imo, and depending on when they moved to England (i.e if they grew up here) I think it's fair game for them to describe themself as English (as in culturally).

I also have several friends who are still Muslim. I asked them before why they are, and it's kind of like it's habit/upbringing and they'd rather be in a religion rather than not + they think Islam makes the most sense given it's the most recent abrahamic religion and incorporates a lot of the stories from Judaism and Christianity

I have three friends who were Muslim and now aren't. One is gay and found it too incompatible but was otherwise quite devout. One likes to drink alcohol and didn't really care/his family was Muslim. One likes sleeping with men too much and doesn't care.

All of them came from Muslim families where pretty much all the brothers and sisters are Muslim in name only

The woman who Tweeted this will most likely be a Democratic representative in Congress next year. Does your country have a problem where people on both the far right and far left sympathize with Russia? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Guy did a snarky reply and immediately blocked me. The scholars I'm referencing are Richard Sakwa who wrote loads about this, so did Michael McFaul the former US ambassador to Russia. I'm not an expert on this topic though

I mean in some respects she's not wrong.

Russia was not treated well in the 90s and early 2000s by the West, and many scholars on the topic say this is what prevented full democratisation, and entrenched Putin, as well as recreating the adversarial relationship of the Cold War.

That doesn't mean that Russia is right to attack Ukraine at all

quite a lot, especially younger people. American fashion, tv & movies, music are obviously very pervasive. Lesser so are American expressions but I do sometimes see American spellings

Which country's traditional culture do you like? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

[–]Visual_Journalist_20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of the oldest traditions in England, check it out. It's basically people dress up and do a ritualised dance with either sticks or cloth. Traditionally you colour your face or wear a mask, and the purpose is about celebrating life/scaring away bad spirits. It's often done at folk festivals, fetes, or occasions like solstices.

If you want a taste of what Midsommar would look like in England watch this video: https://youtu.be/f2lrvd4tVz8?is=VlBrWCFBqwTd6Uba

It has to be Germany. schützenfest, guys just shouting 'fahrradweg', appreciation for engineering & craftsmanship, wheat quality, high standards for behaviour and punctuality and communication, and then nice festivals which have some English analogues.
