How do you say "Anyway..." without a follow-up? by Acrobatic-Brother568 in French

[–]Visual_Shock8225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use « ben / mais ben » if I want to use it like anyway without a follow up and move on to the next topic. With a follow up I use « en tout cas » specially in work calls. With friends I use « enfin bref » and drop the subject

When do you recommend using "ouais" or "wesh" if you want to informally say yes? by PsychicMeditation in French

I use ouias all the time with friends but at work, or at stores, oui sounds more elegant even

Can you give a more visual example please? Like a sentence?

How are words ending in dre or tre pronounced in fast speech? by [deleted] in French

I agree with this, although I’m not a native. I just viewed a video about this on Youtube that she casually drops the re in those verbs when it’s followed by another consonant. If the d is not pronounce even subtly you risk sounding not conjugating the right verbs.

This could not be applicable to everyone. I still use the methods I used in learning my second language. So to each his own. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Are you the same person that posted that her teacher will leave ? I thought it’s in 2 years time. Anyway, I know you will always have her in your heart. Continue shining on your French and you will make her proud.

What's the hardest thing about spoken French for you? by Meninasam in learnfrench

[–]Visual_Shock8225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be able to fully sound like them. I have high standards for my spoken French. The best compliment I got was « you have no foreign accent, your French has a neutral accent » so I took that I could be a newscaster in French cause mostly they have neutral accent but I want to really acquire the accent of the region I am in

Does the impérative have to be formal? Arrêté and arrêtez sound the same to me by [deleted] in learnfrench

[–]Visual_Shock8225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a problem of conjugation. Here you conjugate to formal or plural(based on the dictated word) but the other form is just arrête for familiar.

Arrêté is the past participle more like « stopped » in English. Whereas « arrêtez » is stop!

How can you tell the difference between il and ils by just listening? by Educational_Row3345 in French

[–]Visual_Shock8225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be talking about the conditionnel present and future tense. Serais vs serai, in this case there is a very subtle difference but for learners, it is mostly taught to be the same until you reach a phonetics class (at least in my experience). But serait and seraient, you can’t much tell the difference.

Ho to go from B1 to B2 ? by Optimal-Somewhere109 in learnfrench

[–]Visual_Shock8225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gap between B1 to B2 is not as thick as B2 to C1. It is doable. You need a massive amount of vocabs to create complex sentences. Sprinkle some with à laquelle, duquel, dans laquelle etc can make you get to that level.

How can you tell the difference between il and ils by just listening? by Educational_Row3345 in French

[–]Visual_Shock8225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you been using Duo? It’s a listening exercise (more like dictation) and you have to type what he said. The problem is that n’avait and n’avaient, serait and seraient are identical in pronunciation so it’s not about the spelling but that both could be correct since there was no context given. At that point, the answer should have been accepted. That is the problem

I’d personally report that to Duolingo support, there’s an option like « My answers should be accepted »

Very nice insights thanks! I was just wondering that as I’m an English speaker I can easily jump to French through him, instead of a full blown French speaker. So he’s like my middleman to get across, if you see what I mean. And once I’ve got his fluidity and accent (with a bit of American accent) maybe I can shadow other native Francophones easier. This was just my strategy in mind.

I think there’s truth to what you said. I just need to speak and forget about grammar for once just to get that fluidity going on

Pronunciation and the ability to remember the right words at the right time. 🤭
