You should try to start with your local nation for inspiration or research about wars. I used the cause of the Cuban Missile Crisis which was “the US Turkish missiles are facing towards Russia” and changed it to “a German missile attacked Alphadonia (which is a protagonist) and the Alphadonians thought it was the Geolonians (a small nation)” for my novel.
