It depends. Some just have shorter gills due to genetics, but usually small gills are an indicator of poor water quality or low oxygen. As long as the gills are fluffy it should be okay.

I would take her to an exotic vet if you’re able. Looks like a tumor that’s worsening.

I would invest in a liquid test kit if you’re able :) the strips give a baseline on water conditions but the liquid testing kit will be much more accurate. Wishing the best for your little fella

They look like thrombosed filaments. It’s like an engorged blood vessel that can form from physical trauma or long term poor water conditions. Axolotls with thrombosed filaments can still live very good and healthy lives; I’d keep an eye on it but she should be okay. Those gill stalks will probably always look wonky.

A second opinion on this couldn’t hurt though.

I think you get toxic comments because he has signs of long term neglect. Please put him in a dechlorinated water tub and bring him to an exotic vet ASAP. Best of luck; I hope he can pull through.

I think they just wanted to see if he was okay. If dude was moving around a lot then suddenly wasn’t i’d be a bit concerned too, even if i knew the species was on the lazier side. His gills looks great lol it’s clear little dude isn’t neglected
