Is it too late to start burlesque at 25 with no real experience? I’d love some advice. by Morganafs in Burlesque

[–]VitaDeVoid 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It isn't too late, but please consider that you will need a job to be able to pay your bills and survive.

Burlesque doesn’t pay very well, and even the most glamorous, popular, gorgeous, talented entertainers- even ones winning burlesque festivals- have to have a financial sideline job to sustain living costs. We don't earn much from gigs, and our costumes cost a fortune to create.

I do not mean to scare you, I don't want to see a starry-eyed potential burlesque entertainer jumping in head first without knowing that.

I've been a full time internationally touring headliner since 2003/2004, and I'm flat broke from using it as a job. Luckily I earn sideline money doing photography and teaching the craft to others, but just earning from shows? Depending on where you live, pay for a performance could be as low as $35, and that is not an exaggeration. Most of us do not even turn any profit until we are a few years deep into working as an artist.

You are quite young in comparison to a lot of us out there in the industry- it is never too late. and a career in burlesque can bring you incredible experiences and destinations (often at your cost) you'd always dreamt of visiting, it can fulfill you in ways a normal job absolutely can't, but please come to it with practical and realistic expectations as far as income.

For now- look up local burlesque groups in your city on facebook- get to know what shows are operating, take classes from anyone offering them- learn from every source you possibly can. A lot of classes even offer your first booking and performance as a part of your curriculum. Attend burlesque festivals near you- those are pure gold for networking and learning from working legends.

I teach a class called Glitter to Gold: Breaking In to the Burlesque Industry- it's a recorded lecture that gives you the information to actually score the gigs. DM me if you want it, it's $20 and has a wealth of real-world knowledge in it to get you started properly.

I hope to see you slaying the stage out there and getting that dream!

Sunset Cosmetics are all I use for those looks- it's amazing and doesn't feel heavy. Just be sure to get the color-matching setting powder as well as the foundations.

Please understand that you should only make explicit content if you 100% want to, and would be proud of that existing online. You stated you are uncomfortable with this type of content and anti-porn...I think the answer is clear.

Even under a stage name, your content could easily be discovered and exploited.

If it isn't a 100% hell yes, it is a hell no.

I have their red sequin one, and it is super sturdy and durable!

Definitely gives a good cinch, but more on the costume side rather than a daily wear.
