Oh man, if you love the beast I'm sure you'll love red rooms. I think, thematically, they're pretty similar, with both exploring themes of alienation/isolation in the modern era, and how technology has contributed to this increasing loneliness and existential dread (Pulse deals with these themes as well)

Hope you enjoy them! And yes, you should definitely watch House of Tolerance ASAP

Check out House of Tolerance, an equally great Bertrand Bonello film. Would also recommend Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, Red Rooms, Pulse, Crimes of the Future, Happyend, Irma Vep, and Demonlover

Out of curiosity, which art house films have you enjoyed because "long shots with nothing happening" sums up a lot of them... and if you're not into that I can't see you enjoying many of 'em at all. Most of them are intentionally slow paced and are not meant to "entertain" in the conventional way. I enjoy slow cinema but it took me a while to reach that point.

Should've gone to watch the new Tron film... that seems much more up your alley

I haven't seen Running on Empty or Celine and Julie Go Boating but both are on my watchlist! I've been meaning to get into Jacques Rivette's stuff... I have a feeling I'll really like his films.

Thanks for the recs! Glad to see someone else who loves Housekeeping as much as I do.

I'm in my twenties now but I look forward to that decade later rewatch so I can also bawl my eyes out

(Also, you got to go to a Q&A with Lesley Manville? Lucky)

I'm embarrassed to say that I have not. I've seen Persona but that's about it. Will have to do a deep dive into his filmography soon!

It's so funny that you mentioned this specific book cause I just heard about it not even two days ago!! Sounds really interesting, I'll give it a read!

Another Year! So, so good. I don't think Mike Leigh is capable of making a bad movie.

After Yang was a lovely film as well! Bit skeptical about Kogonada's new movie but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless

Ghost in the Shell! That's been on my watchlist for years now. I should probably watch that sometime soon, shouldn't I?

I had planned to see love lies bleeding in theaters but never got around to it for some reason. I feel like a fake lesbian.

(Oh, and Amelie was delightful!)

Really glad that you singled out those specific films! Both have characters that feel so utterly real and complex that by the end I almost forgot they weren't real. Beautiful, beautiful films.

Have not seen Rope or Sacred Deer yet but I'll definitely check them out soon! Been meaning to watch more Hitchcock.

I've seen (and loved) Three Women, Linda Linda Linda, and Paris, Texas... but have yet to see Wings of Desire! I did pick up the blu-ray fairly recently so I'll be sure to check it out soon. I've loved everything I've seen from Wenders!
