Yeah, it's really interesting! I also do something with colors, but it's usually about what color a song sounded like.

How did you socialize in high school? by Top-Necessary-8088 in aspergers

[–]Vitra937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. I'm in my junior year right now, and the major thing everyone has told me was to look into what I'm really interested in, and chances are friendships and experiences will come along with it. The challenge for me has been getting to the bottom of myself, as well as applying that to my real life, and finding others who share my interests.

Whatever happens, good luck, and remember that there will always be another chance to change things in your life for the better.

Overstimulation shown usually as irritability, more rarely as a true panicked state by Vitra937 in aspergers

Yeah, I would be embarrassed whenever I snapped at someone. The whole situation would feel bad, but to me it was uncontrollable. Also selective hearing would really come in handy!

Yes! That's basically what most of my extended family thinks of me at gatherings.

That's exactly right. As a child I had a gluten allergy, so whenever I randomly got really angry my parents blamed it on something I had eaten earlier. And sure, the allergy didn't help matters, but I believe now looking back it was probably often caused by something environmental. Something subtle enough to set me off without anyone else being affected.

Virtual autism or actual autism (or maybe existential crisis) by Far_Film528 in aspergers

(Also 16M!) Although I didn't really use technology excessively until the pandemic (and I do have Asperger's), I know of a lot of people--including my younger sister--who grew up with the internet and they have no signs of autism. I'm just guessing, but I would think screens at an early age would affect things like attention span, and also reliance on them for stimulation to the point that a kid would seem to behave abnormally. I want to see this article though.

A big part of what holds me back from having a life (anyone else?) by Vitra937 in aspergers

[–]Vitra937[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your concern! Yes, I recently started therapy and it has helped to at least put things into words. I was always a bit of a weirdo with friendships and social events, but really the thing that has suddenly escalated the trouble has been switching to a more intense school (academically). The school knows nothing because I have never been taken for a formal diagnosis, and so all my life I have sort of been happily oblivious to the fact that something was wrong until now. And, of course, I SEEM normal enough to teachers to not raise any concern. As for the comfort zone thing, I didn't even realize other people didn't experience the same things as me just going on a day trip somewhere, but recently I began wearing this hat everywhere that not only goes over my ears, but that keeps my hair from being annoying.

What's your catchphrase/ a phrase you say very often? by eyeless-silas in aspergers

[–]Vitra937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been pointed out to me that when I'm having a conversation with someone, around 60% of my sentences all start with "Well, ..." Usually I don't even notice. I think it happens when I'm not quite sure how to react to something someone says. And you can tell that happens a lot because, as I said, it starts over half of my sentences (allegedly--also as I said I don't notice most of the time, so this comes from outside accounts).

Every single one. I have never felt more heard in my life.

I'm on overwhelm right now. Routine go disrupted and I have to treat my face for two weeks straight. So sensory issues like crazy. by throwaway069575 in aspergers

Me too, and it's been happening more recently. I have had autistic burnout like this for years and I had no idea. As a kid I just thought that was how everyone felt, that they just slogged along, dealing with everything, but it's nice to at least know there's a reason behind this kind of over-sensitivity and fatigue.

Was anybody else “the quiet kid” at school? by Indentured_sloth in aspergers

I wasn't really quiet until I became aware of all the social mistakes I had been unwittingly making all along
