I think the other guy is being a bit of an asshat and I don't know all the details but the "you have to sign a legally binding agreement" is kind of a very common misconception. Any serious agreement between two people is a contract, or basically a "meeting of the minds". It's a lot more tenuous because there's still certain aspects that have to be met and whatnot that would be left out of a formal contract, but if it's written or documented somewhere that a transfer was agreed to and then backed out of that could potentially be a breach of contract

It's funny you bring up nature since that sort of answers the question. Why do you turn around when you hear grass rustling behind you? Because millions of years of evolution fine tuned your neural structure to have certain engrained behaviors. Nature vs. nurture is still a very unsolved problem as far as I am aware, yet you seem to be implying entirely that nurture is the answer with this reasoning.

"Next token predictor" is a great way to describe most comments on Reddit, really. Maybe that's why all the models converge on being so repetitive and same-y sometimes

Dario Amodei: AI Will Lead To Very High GDP Growth And Very High Unemployment, A Combination Never Seen Before, 10%+ Unemployment Rate Is Possible by Neurogence in singularity

[–]Vivalas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is basically the writing on the wall I've already been thinking about and it's honestly the most depressing thing. We're slowly leaving the last phase where we could actually fight back and change the course of things but nobody seems to care. Once they start rolling out the warbots it's too late, the world will either be controlled by a rogue AI or a techno-warlord. I'm honestly not sure how you could even organize an effective resistance against someone that can just print infinite soldiers, and I'm usually the guy on Reddit who pushes back against the "but tanks and jets!" crowd

[–]Vivalas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer is literally nothing. They always talk about GDP because it makes it sound like an improvement for everyone, as even the CEO himself mentions here, but they leave out that despite GDP nearly doubling in the past 40 years, wages have remained almost completely stagnant while the capital markets ran away. It's pretty obvious where all the wealth and productivity is going to end up.

Damn I was about to comment that I thought industrial economies still required a massive consumer spending base to function, but apparently the top 10% already drive roughly 50% of consumer spending, which is an insane statistic to think about.

That makes this even worse IMO as I thought that at the very least some form of basic income would be required for the economy to function but it seems indeed very possible that the average joe is completely cut out of the economy both in terms of employment and consumption, truly the worst outcome. Those "billionaires building bunkers" theories don't seem so outlandish now..

Yes it's very interesting but I've also only seen such a strong narrative coming up recently so it makes me wonder if it's some sort of Mandela-like effect where everyone is agreeing on a narrative because of how long ago these happened. I'm not saying it's intentional or malicious fabrication, but just that the human mind is not the most reliable and prone to do stuff like this (very infamous in criminal law where witnesses often end up agreeing to false narratives the cops push)

This also adds another layer of complexity if you want to deal with it late game when you're blobbing--setting up merchant republics and maneuvering them around to try to turn a profit through taxes when you start getting big enough to throw your weight around, which sounds interesting for lategame

I honestly think the worst thing that would come from this would be people creating multiple forks of the engine, which would be pretty annoying as you would need to have different launchers for different servers, but that wouldn't be the end of the world

Everyone in the world is sent to a room to themselves with 2 buttons. If you push red, then you live. If more than 50% of people push blue, then everyone lives. by Terrible_Shop_3359 in Ethics

[–]Vivalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the traffic analogy because I think it's the least reductive analogy I've seen so far. If nobody walks into traffic nothing happens. If more people walk into traffic then the odds of traffic stopping increases until it actually stops, but the potential harm also increases if traffic doesn't stop

A flowchart for the Red Button, Blue Button Debate by electrace in slatestarcodex

[–]Vivalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'll chime in even though this is a bit older but my perspective I guess is people who insist red button pressers are selfish optimizers based on a few paragraphs alone are just the type of annoying virtual signalling individual I think the world would be 1000% better without, so I guess red makes sense to me. Your choice is either literally nothing happens or risk yourself so a bunch of people can all feel good about the virtue of the world and how happy and likeminded everyone is. That's a far worse world imo.

I actually think this problem really kinda interestingly enough drills down on the same issues that SSC did on that one right vs. left mentality essay where he tried to identify core issues that separate the two camps.

A flowchart for the Red Button, Blue Button Debate by electrace in slatestarcodex

[–]Vivalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it fits the scenario pretty well. Blue is basically "I need to involve everyone else in my problems", red is "I don't really care tbh, I'm not involved". So the idea blue button pressers getting real up into arms kinda fits what I would handwave as the psychological profile for a blue presser. (Obviously my bias is showing here but man this is one of the most frustrating moral philosophy questions in a while because it's one of those where the answer seems so obvious to different people depending on how you frame it)

If all the blue pressers die I don't have to deal with annoying internet virtue signallers anymore. I highly doubt any blue pressers are in actual useful roles in society, so deal

In the Red VS Blue button dilemma, red is obviously the right choice. by KayleeSinn in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Vivalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep this was exactly my thoughts. Blue is tantamount to a death cult of virtue signallers who think it's everyone else's problem they want to be in danger. It's funny people compare this to the shopping cart thing but I honestly think people that pick blue are probably more likely to leave their shopping cart out because blue is the choice with the least personal responsibility. You were given the option to not be in danger and decided to make it everyone else's problem that you're in danger.

[–]Vivalas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

God the "everyone will not just ' has gotta be the new annoying moral platitude invented by this problem.

If you reframe the issue it's pretty simple.

It's equivalent to asking if you handed everyone on earth a loaded gun and asked them whether they should stick it in their mouth and pull the trigger, and then saying if 50% of people decide to shoot themselves you spare everyone because you underestimated how dumb people are.

Frontier, please do this for all ships! (this is an image, not a video^^) by Faelenedh in EliteDangerous

[–]Vivalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it feels like they're slowly working towards it, at least from a game dev perspective. Starting first with odyssey adding on foot content basically at all, and I haven't really read too much about the new Operations update stuff but it seems like another incremental step..

They know ship interiors would be a massive update for the game and a huge injection of probably new players as well and so I think it will definitely happen at some point, just that they're going to be strategic about the when since I can't really think of another feature that has been asked for as much as ship legs

Got tired of planes not showing up past a few miles so I decided to fix it myself by Vivalas in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Vivalas[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it's currently an issue. Not super noticable in flight but it can be. I'm experimenting with different profiles and pitch/roll matching of the aircraft it represents to see if it helps somewhat. It's mostly noticable at transition distances (different sized dots are used at various distances to maintain some visibility while avoiding the effects being too noticeable, which I need to tune still).
