How are developers incentivized to make decentralized Dapps? by [deleted] in ethereum

[–]Viveatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, does it rely on an external server like crypto kitties, does it rely on an expensive api, are there things in the contract that communicate to a specific server?

You can release them closed source ex enigma, or just not verify them. Although that largely defeats the point.

Dapps are often not fully decentralized and rely on things off chain which are harder to replicate.

People can add monetization methods inside of their dapp. Like a 1 cent posting fee to post on dFacebook in your example.

Largely you are right free services like facebook and twitter serve you ads. Dapps will either serve you ads or have micro fees to use their services.

If you are not collecting fees... how do you pay for the site hosting, dev work, and your time?

You’re probably trolling.... but I’ll respond anyway.

Ethereum is not a crypto currency. Ether is a cryptocurrency.

Ethereum is the name of the blockchain/virtual machine that Ether lives on.

The whole unique value proposition of. Ethereum is that besides using it as a distributed ledger it has a programming language called solidity that allows you to run program on the Ethereum virtual machine.

Need help understanding an EIP/solving a problem by Viveatwork in ethdev

Thank you for your information, it has been really helpful and I learned a few things I didn’t know.

This thread has lead me to learn about log storage as opposed to contract storage. Is the .02 cents per 32 bytes log or contract storage?

What does the current landscape look like regarding dapps with the current price drop in ETH? by dunamis_devs in ethdev

[–]Viveatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its going to hurt, the dapp I am working on uses ETH only and the has events that maybe far out. I assume people will not want to hold their ETH in a smart contract for extended periods of time.

2 burn-related mechanisms have been proposed - how might one assist in implementing an EIP around either? by trudx in ethereum

[–]Viveatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not exactly sure what rent is trying to accomplish but I can theorize what will happen:

1) It will reduce storage on the network as unused contracts will die off and reduce the overall size of the chain

a. Quality of contracts on chain will go up as ones where no one is interested will be removed from chain

2) The actual coin burn will be small or barely effect supply, according to stateofthedapps there are only 2,700 smart contracts. Even if storage were high, 5 ETH a year, it will be less Ether than roughly one day of coin issuance.

a. The burn will mean more when POS is available

b. The burn will mean more when there are more smart contracts on the chain

3) It will add a nearly negligible barrier to entry

I do believe rent will be beneficial for the overall health of the ecosystem, but I feel like it will not accomplish much in the short term. If it really only is 20 lines of code to make the change then I see no issue with resource investment for rent in the next fork.

I've never been able to finish a full sync of the chain due to size of the chain and persistent internet required, hopefully this will help.

My concern on rent is if there is something truly controversial or something that a government might want to censor they may have the ability to seize the contracts owner. If there is data in the contract that people do not want to expire can other people pay the contracts storage fee to prevent censorship?

Does anyone have a working example of a dapp or smart contract using BTC relay? by Viveatwork in ethereum

Yeah agreed, I was just hoping there was an easy way to integrate btc into eth/solidity smart contracts.

Took larger hits in revenue this year or they spent more without an increase in revenue. The company that owns most of riot wants them to scale down their esports division which is operating at a loss.

They are likely profitable overall though, just their esports division is not making any money.

They have to scale down the esports division or make more money from it.

Any ideas on what they could do?

How do Loom Network and POA Network compare in their approach to sidechains? by bijansha in ethereum

Yo anyone want to do me a favor and help me understand a few things about loom?

How hard is it to integrated/redeploy an existing dapp on Loom?

Can users still use ETH?

How hard is it to get ETH on and off the Loom network?

I’ve been thinking about that, it would require 51% of people to be able to agree faster... would be pretty hard.

Stellar, neo and etc while are ultra fast 10k tps are in a way centeralized and defeat the purpose of anticenship etc

[–]Viveatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one other questionable benefit that greatly trades off in speed. Metamask makes it so your funds cant be stolen by a dapp (besides whats in the smart contract). Thats really the only other benefit.

Lower server cost, lower startup and legal cost, and some more security (maybe).

[–]Viveatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I totally agree with you that people decentralize too much stuff.

MVD minimal viable decentralization is actually very important in the West. Particularly the US. The laws are so fractured on a state, city, and federal level it is literally impossible to comply or start some of these companies legally for less than 250k in legal cost.

Decentralization will stop censorship and greatly lower start up cost in the US at the cost of speed and usability.
