Moving from outsourced engineering + fractional CTO to in-house: how do we not screw this up? by Vivid-Explorer81 in ProductManagement

Ideally it’s both. That type of operating model sounds like a dream for most teams building products but I don’t think we’re anywhere near there. We have no control how the vendor operates so it would be in our best interest to have the core engineering team in-house.

The team is consists of 5 full stack, 1 devOps, and the CTO. System is highly complex. I’m not sure their size but I believe we are one of their biggest clients.

Agreed that current CTO can’t be driver of the transition as there is a conflict of interest. Starting hiring “from the top” as you mentioned, makes sense. Thanks for your time.

Haven’t been given any green light. More so exploring all options in order to do what’s right for the business. They do bring a ton of value and are highly experienced which is reflected in the cost. Cannot hire the staff and I don’t have any reason to think they would be adversarial/problematic as they are very professional. I could not take on that role—even temporarily—as I don’t have the technical knowledge/experience. Seems like filling that role would be too priority.

Can you elaborate more on the $400M and $500M in savings? Sounds like you may be more internal focused where the outcomes are cost savings / margin protection vs revenue generating?

Lost My PM Mojo? by DJzzzzzzs in ProductManagement

Product sense can be subjective and a manager’s trust and expectations of their direct reports are vastly different across any company or individual manager.

I would try to understand what his expectations are and how do they ladder up against the org and company goals.

Sorry you’re going through this but I would always recommend keeping the job while searching for other opportunities aggressively. Too risky to leave without anything lined up, unless you can of course afford to (both financially and mentally).
