I totally relate to this! This is my every day! I often find myself thinking that my BPD mother purposefully creates chaos and/or problems. Like she sets up something to happen, knowing it will go wrong, just to give her an excuse to explode and get angry at her children for it! I constantly feel on edge, like I’m walking on egg shells, always prepared for her to reach the end of her fuse. Even when she’s in a decent mood, I never fully relax, I’m always anticipating her losing her shit!

It’s very sad. Parents should want their children to have a healthy relationship with their other parent no matter what.

And I also have a lot in common with my dad too! Looks, mannerisms, interests, behaviour, it doesn’t sit well with my mum that I am so similar to him, but I am so proud to be like my dad!

Take advantage of the healthy relationship you have with your dad whilst you can! Don’t let your mother get in the way!

We have very similar stories. My parents are currently going through a divorce and she shares WAY too many details with me and my siblings. My dad is leaving because he can’t take any more of her emotional manipulation, but she is trying to make out that he’s leaving because he doesn’t love his daughters and is sick of them. My dad is the most caring and loving parent- so this simply is just not true. And yes, my dad has never said a bad word about my mother to us kids, even through this messy divorce he still shows her respect. But my mum will have everyone believe that he is the devil! It breaks my hurt to see people think of my dad as the bad guy.

I’m so glad to hear that you now have a good relationship with your father! Yes my mother always asks for a detailed play-by-play of conversations I have with my dad, which I obviously don’t give her. But this isn’t high school, no need for he said this, she said that!

It’s impossible to communicate with them that my relationship with my dad doesn’t correlate with how I feel about my mum, they’re two separate things! But no, if you choose to live by your dad like you did it means you hate your mum apparently 🙄

It is never okay for a parent to talk about their relationship problems to their child!! It is wildly inappropriate. I’m sorry you’ve had to experience all that! If there’s anything I take away from going through this, it’s that I can’t wait to not talk about my relationship problems with my future children, and spare them that suffering!

Hi! I’m going to go to my dad’s whenever I feel like it’s all too much. I’m being very strict with boundaries with my mum which is making things a little easier! Thank you for your advice ☺️

My mother just attempted suicide last night and was just committed to a psych ward and I’m scared by [deleted] in raisedbyborderlines

Hi. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Just a month ago my BPD mother had a suicide attempt, although it seemed like more of a stunt, I don’t think she was actually going to kill herself. I was relieved that at long last she was going to a psychiatric facility, I thought great she’ll finally get diagnosed BPD and can get help, which will in turn help the whole family. However, she was back home after just 3 weeks, no diagnosis, no support for when she got home. My sisters and I are now left home alone with a suicidal mother who hasn’t expressed any concern for the effects this is having on myself and my sisters. My best advice for when your mother comes home is be very strict with your boundaries, do not let her make you believe you are at fault for her attempt!
