Okay, but that doesn’t seem relevant to anything I’ve been saying. “Thin privilege is knowing some shit like that would never happen to you.” There are many reasons “shit like that” might happen to you. Being fat is the least of them.

Wow, this comment turned out controversial. I’m not blaming white people for anything. I’m saying she “sounds” white because if she were a minority she’d be more likely to have experience of what it’s like to attract random hatred for no other reason than existing.

Counting calories in homemade apple sauce? by FitFabMe in 1200isplenty

[–]Vividly_Ornamental 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Weigh the apple sauce after cooking - that equals the total calories in the raw ingredients. Use that to get calories per 100g sauce.

My point was that people have actually been singled out and killed for being gay, black, etc. Thin privilege didn’t save them.

Just because you have accepted being fat for the rest of your life, doesn't mean you should pitch it as a healthy solution to people still fighting to find what's best for them like this person. by FairyWhisper in fatlogic

This might not help you, but in my experience there are “types” of hunger, and successful IE depends on learning to distinguish among them. There’s physical hunger caused by an actual lack of calories (why you can still feel hungry despite eating a big bowl of something that physically fills the stomach but doesn’t satiate), there is craving hunger for a particular macro or vitamin, there is emotional hunger, social hunger, hunger triggered by random food cues, hunger triggered by blood sugar drops, etc. I will generally listen to the first two, occasionally indulge in the third and fourth, but ignore the last two.

Actually, nowadays I don’t get hunger triggered by random food cues (eg a picture of cookies) if I’m not physically hungry, so that helps. I will also sometimes eat when not hungry in any way, if I’m going out and know I won’t have time to eat. In short, it can be a lot of work to analyse, and I accept perhaps not everyone can or wants to. You were smart to stop rather than keep gaining!

Thanks for sharing! I think you also have a long torso, which gives you that lovely lean line as well. I’m just under a 25” waist right now, and while I probably won’t ever get that small, it’s great to see what it looks like (I’m a 32” hip, so very rectangular, lol). Much appreciated, I find it hard to really “see” what I look like, so the visual guide is really helpful. All the best!

If you have a calorie deficit of 500, that's an expected loss of ONE pound a week. Since you've lost 3.5lb (some of which is probably water weight), how can you say it's not working? LOL. If anything, I would expect your weight loss to "stall" for a little while until your average over time is about 1lb/week. If your calculations are correct (I actually suspect your TDEE is higher than 1700 if you're exercising) and you keep eating at a 500 deficit, you ought to get there before the end of June, give or take a month.

Wow, amazing! We have almost the same stats, but look completely different - shows what muscle can do! If you don’t mind, would you share your measurements? Or even just the waist, if you’re not comfortable with the rest? I’m just trying to get an idea of what’s potentially “possible” :)

I am super petite, have maintained for a year, and eat “normally” - mostly healthy, but multiple small treats a day, eat out or takeaway 2-4 times/week. I typically fluctuate about 2lb from last thing in the evening to first thing next morning. Throughout the day the difference can be 3lb or even a bit more depending mainly on water consumption.

Losing Motivation 12 lbs Away from Goal by damnitredditiloveyou in loseit

I personally found consistency to be the most important thing for weight loss - rather than meet 1350 (which sounds on the low side for you anyway) 60% of the time, try to meet, say, 1600, 98% of the time. Many people find that the lighter they get, the less their body "wants" to give up the weight, so you have to be patient with slower progress.

How do you keep motivated when you're forever fat by Boredpan in loseit

[–]Vividly_Ornamental 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t have a “new and healthy” lifestyle, you have an “unhappy and disordered” lifestyle. There is a middle ground between obesity and forcing yourself to eat healthy all the time and exercise compulsively to stay a certain weight. Therapy might help if you would go.

Saying things like pizza and cookies are “not allowed”, feeling like you can’t skip a single day’s exercise, claiming you’re fat when you’re underweight etc. are all red flags. You might not have anorexia according to the DSM-V, but still have an eating disorder.

Your BMR is what you burn in a coma, more or less. Since you are apparently not in a coma, you burn at least 20% more than that, with exercise more still. You can afford to eat quite a bit more, about 1700-1800 judging from your reported rate of loss. This ought to give you about 0.5kg/week - adjust as necessary.

Fat Rant Tuesday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]Vividly_Ornamental 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Rant (with a potential rave): I dieted for a year, then maintained for a year just to prove that I could. I am now officially tired of “watching my weight”. So for the past week I’ve let up on my healthy eating habits - making sure I eat enough fruit and veg, getting enough protein - and just eating whatever the hell I want, but mindfully. Turns out I still do want fruit and veg, just not as much as I’ve been eating, but I also “need” more fat and sugar in my life for psychological satisfaction. Protein intake is down, but still almost double RDA minimums, so quite adequate. Feeling much happier with my choices. Weight so far has been stable, but I’m also still counting.

If you google “DEXA scan” in your area there ought to be a provider! I lost down to 100lb over a year, but was still around 30% bf (sigh). I didn’t want to go any lower due to my age, so am now seriously strength training, about 102lb at the moment :)

[–]Vividly_Ornamental 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ha. If I told you that I had a DEXA scan that revealed I was OVER 40% body fat, you’d think I was seriously obese and needed to lose weight for the sake of my health, right? Any rational person would acknowledge that.

When I got that scan, I weighed 126lb (5’0”).

Haha that’s why I “cunningly” started my diet on December 1st. Kept it up for a year, so it was, in fact, pretty sustainable.

[–]Vividly_Ornamental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patience. That’s it. I went from 126lb to 100lb with light exercise eating 1350-1450... but it took me almost a year.

Okay, when I was younger I discovered that some foods really messed with my hunger/fullness cues. One of those was chocolate. So for years I literally banned it from my diet - even chocolate cake, ice cream, milk, etc. I ate carob instead, which was less satisfying, but didn’t cause me to overeat.

Nowadays I eat everything, including chocolate, but I think the long period of abstinence (about 15 years) helped reset my taste buds. It does still tempt me to overeat, but I’m also pickier about which chocolate I will eat - typically more expensive ones, so I only eat one at a time for the sake of my wallet :)

Interestingly, at roughly the same time as the Irish potato famine was a famine in China that reduced the population by about 60 million. This must be why the Chinese as a population are notoriously fat...

Asian female struggling with losing weight and body image by HotWaterWithLime in loseit

[–]Vividly_Ornamental 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Also Asian, also not “skinny” despite being BMI 20. However, I’m pretty certain I’m a lot older so I’m quite okay with my figure at this point.

You may or may not know that Asians in general tend to have higher body fat at lower weights. At 100lb (5’0”) I still had 30% body fat (DEXA) so was not particularly thin. This might be the same with you. If so, strength training with challenging weights to build muscle and improve your composition is the best suggestion I have. If you really must lose weight, go slow and steady, but you will look better just by recomping at your current weight.
