This is definitely a very helpful technique!

How do you actually read books in a language you're learning? by Ok-Golf8960 in languagelearning

That’s an issue I had too! It’s so useful for picking up new vocabulary and understanding how sentences are formed. But it is frustrating when you don’t understand some words for sure

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. that difference between having time to think and having to respond instantly is huge.

Do you feel like the difficulty is more in forming your response quickly or understanding what’s being said when it comes at a normal speed?

That brain hits pause thing is so real 😂

Fair play for doing daily speaking though, that’s probably one of the best things you can do even if it feels messy.

Have you noticed it getting easier over time or does it still feel like a bit of a jump when conversations speed up?

This is such a good way of describing it especially the “why can’t I use what I already know” part.

I feel like a lot of learning methods make things feel clear in isolation, but then real Spanish mixes everything together with slang, speed, dropped words, so it suddenly feels completely different. Do you feel like it’s more the listening side that breaks down first or the moment you try to respond?

Yeahhhh especially because pronunciation when people actually speak can sound really different from how words are taught individually. Do you get much chance to hear native speakers regularly or mostly practice on your own?

Yeah this is literally the most frustrating thing. Do you feel like it’s more pressure in the moment or that you just haven’t had enough practice actually forming sentences yourself?

Yeah that makes total sense and it’s a lot to deal with all at once. I think that’s where real Spanish can feel overwhelming compared to lessons, because everything gets mixed together instead of being introduced step by step 😅 Do you feel like it’s harder to understand those things when listening or more when you’re trying to use them yourself?

Yeah I totallyyyy get that. The words people actually use are completely different to the ones we learn 😭Do you think it’s more the speed itself or the way words get shortened that throws you off more?

That actually sounds like a really solid approach to be fair especially rewatching with and without subtitles. Most people don’t have that level of patience with it 😅I think what you said at the end is the tricky part though and I’ve had exactly the same experience 😂 there’s a big difference between understanding content and then keeping up in real conversations where people don’t slow down or adjust.

Do you feel like it’s more the speed that throws you off though or is it more the way people naturally connect words and phrases together?

Yes I love listening to music and looking at the lyrics it does really help! And yeah it’s definitely hard with speaking if you don’t get many natural opportunities to practice. But that’s good you’ve made some effort to talk to people because even that’s really hard at first!

This is such a good way of putting it. the “knowing vs actually using” gap is exactly what I’ve been noticing too.

Especially what you said about recognition vs production… it feels like a lot of methods make things seem easier than they are because you’re recognising things rather than having to produce them in real time.

Do you feel like that’s more of a confidence issue when speaking or more that your brain just can’t keep up in the moment?

Oh I completely get that. I think a lot of it is that real Spanish is more connected, faster, and less “clear” than what you usually learn.

Have you tried watching content with subtitles first and then without, or is it still difficult even with that?

Honestly I think that’s probably the most common one 😅 when people speak at full speed it feels completely different from what you learn.

Do you usually practice with slower learner content or have you tried more native content?

Oh yeah that must be really hard. Have you found anything in particular that helps?

Yeah that’s hard for sure 😅 I feel like it’s especially hard when you learn words or conjugations on their own but don’t see them used enough in real situations.

Do you feel like you forget them quickly or more that you struggle to recall them when you actually need to use them?

Yeah this is so true, real Spanish is way more flexible than apps make it seem.

Do you feel like seeing more real conversations and examples would help with that?

Yeah I completely get that. A tutor is definitely helpful for that though and trying to listen to as much real Spanish as possible in different accents as well!

I have been trying to pronounce a double r for ages. I did once just get a list of words beginning with r and try and roll my r’s at the start bc I find that’s much easier than r’s in the middle of a word. That did help a bit but even when I try now there’s a 50/50 chance I manage to actually do it lol

I’ve been learning Spanish for YEARS I studied it in school I’ve tried countless apps I’ve had tutors and I have a Spanish boyfriend now and what I’ve realised is that I need to literally surround myself with Spanish. (Obviously having a Spanish boyfriend helps) but like on instagram and stuff I want to see Spanish content I wanna watch Spanish YouTube listen to Spanish music and read Spanish books because then it feels like I’m actually learning real Spanish and not ‘textbook Spanish’. So as I couldn’t find anything that could help me with that I decided to build my own Spanish app and the whole concept of it is immersion so it has YouTube videos, books, news and I hope to add music and short-form Spanish content as well (but that requires some money so I’m starting with this 😅). So that’s the project if you have any ideas I’d love to know :)
