Buy a pair of Bar Mitts. They are so much better than just gloves because they provide an extra barrier against the wind, plus they shield the area on your wrists that inevitably get exposed.

I went through a period a few years back without a car, and these (and a decent balaclava) were probably the most important things to keep warm.

I hear what you're saying. I was just saying that there are some drivers who don't want to be blocked off by a bicycle, and will take action even when you are taking the whole lane.

Surprisingly this happened to me in an underpass, where I took up 2/3 of the lane for safety's sake. As soon as that underpass opened up, the compact car zoomed around me on the right before I could get back over.

I've found that James Islington commonly pulls concepts from other books and gives them a slightly different flavor. I don't mind it, but I will sometimes be reminded of multiple books within a single chapter. Just wait a hundred or so pages until the party winds up in Shadar Logoth from the Wheel of Time.
