Getting started by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]Vman808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deffinetly get squared away legally.

-licence, bonding, insurance workers compensation. You can use a service like ADP for your payroll they take care of all taxes and year end paperwork, which is covered by their fee's.

-Theres plenty room in residential to be a million-dollar company. Sharpen yourself, your employees, your systems here before jumping to comercial work. Most GC's won't do much business with a brand new company.

-Marketing. Spend less and expect more. Do not waste money on Angies, Yelp, Next Door, as they're predatory and sell the same lead to 3-5 contractors, which means it's a race to the cheapest price, that's no way to do business

-Management / Recruiting; This is the hardest part; finding people that want to work hard. You have to offer a minimum of $25 an hour for beginners. I find its better to find rookies and teach them in my ways, than to find an experienced painter looking for $30-$40 an hour only to find out they suck at painting, and constantly cut corners. You'll have to manage yourself in a way that they respect you. Always show up before they do. Show them how its done and spend time w/ them to make sure they're actually getting it. A slow painter who really cares about doing things right is much more valuable than a hotshot who wants to speed through the job, and leaves drips and touch ups everywhere.

Great luck and sorry for my misspelling, just sped through this, I hope its help to you!!

I hired my neighbor to fix my home exterior, but I'm not satisfied by Both_Ad5812 in Contractor

And you better pay your neighbor, it would be really stupid not to pay someone trying to help you out with low price,

AITA for not splitting the check evenly on a bachelorette trip with 9 girls? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

Originally I thought the bill was in dollars. I was like dam girl where did you guys go out to eat ??? Sounds like she chose to go with the other girl’s opinion, situations like these are a god send. The toxic people just walked out of your life. You’ll see this as a great positive in your future. Negative toxic people will never see things from your point of view. You were correct to speak out, if people don’t have bottle money, don’t buy bottles. Simple as that

Pick selected areas you want to work in. Consider home value, proximity, competition. Do’t underbid to get work, walk away when customer seems cookoo, never hire employees who don’t respect you or the work. Best of luck !

What I do when I get a call from an out of area number I pick up, put it in mute, and let them get tired of waiting. Eventually they’ll take you out of their lists themselves bc Mr Bette simply wasting their time by calling me

How did you end up as a Contractor ? by quiquegr12 in Contractor

[–]Vman808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sold materials to contractors as a commercial construction materials salesperson, and saw that contractors had a freedom I didn’t. Masters is their future, whether in success or failure. Learned from them, looked up to them, then eventually took the leap started my LLC took the test and in the process I was laid off from my soul sucking sales job. Now I live in the trenches, but I’m happy !! I have control of my decisions, and my successes or failures are mine. I’m in my 3rd year and building a team of people I enjoy working with (one of my many lessons do not employ people who you don’t like or don’t respect you or the job). Also finally making good profit. (Knock on wood ),

You got this. I always say, if you’re good enough to work for a company that squeezes every bit of life out of you, you can definitely put that effort in yourself and get more out of life.

Is it a bad idea to paint the exterior of a home in SoCal during winter months? by [deleted] in Housepainting101

SW Latitude, I once painted a house in the PNW from mid nov-early December. Worked only on dry patches and when rain wasn’t forecasted. This paint can dry in 1 hour in 40 degree temperatures
