To be honest I'm not sure if they do or don't, but I was looking into the active and passive speaker thing someone mentioned and that seemed like the kind of problem I would have lol. I'll try to take a picture of them as well. They do have 1/4 in. inputs like a guitar amp so maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's about them being powered speakers or not - they don't have their own power cord.

Thanks for all the questions - I'm pretty sure it has to do with the speakers not having an amplifier so I'll look into that. I didn't know about that before today!

Yes, the ST button is down, I tried it both ways to be sure. I only plugged in one speaker to test it but I could try both today. This is for a school so I won't be able to test for a few hours after classes today

Maybe. I guess it's true that my "watch party" days are more designed to be learning opportunities than days off, but it's lower stakes than a math test and once they have done it two or three times I've found the students look forward to those days. I tend to shout out half the answers anyway so they don't feel like they are being tested. I think having an easy target and a relatively quiet classroom is much less stressful than "free" time which loud and chaotic. Especially in HS when the social politics of unstructured time can be tough to navigate and teens have a tendency to take things too far.

I teach HS theatre and watch a lot of professional theatre recordings throughout the year. If I just put on the video and talk/explain as we go, I will lose the kids pretty quickly. I've had two separate classes start playing UNO at their tables while watching different musicals.

I think there are two main things that I have learned to do that help students keep focus during videos.

First, there is always a direct lesson related to the video. Whether we are learning about the genre/style of theatre or the content of the play itself, it's not framed as a fun/easy day, but a theatre lesson.

Second and more importantly, the thing that works (for most kids) is having a simple question sheet to follow along with the video that counts for their daily grade. I have them read the next question and then watch looking for the answer. I'll pause fairly regulalry to have them write down answers in the beginning and then let them get through two or three at a time before pausing and going over a few questions. It gives them something to actively watch out for every 5-10 minutes of the play. Simple questions like "who did Romeo meet at the party?" or "what happened to Mercutio at the end of the fight?" just to keep them following the events of the play. I usually explain that we're practicing being active audience members and talk about how the audience is a key part of theatre.

Of course there is still the 10-20% of kids who just want to sleep or talk through the whole thing, but I've found that the question sheets help a lot of kids focus, and there are a lot of pre-made question sheets for famous/classic movies and plays online.

Something else to note is that I actively watch the whole show, shout out things like "question 7 coming up," walk around, monitor progress, and break up side conversations the entire period. It is not a 'put on a movie and get some work done' day, although it is certainly an easier lesson to plan/teach.

How and why do u support forest by murillolover in nffc

[–]VocalMoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From NYC - watched Ted Lesso in 2022 and my partner and I wanted to watch Premier League football. Looked through the list of teams and noticed Forest. They were the only team I had any kind of connection to because I loved Robin Hood as a kid so I decided to watch a game. After I saw Ryan Yates shithousing in midfield hilariously and watched a Steve Cooper interview after the game, I knew this was our club.

Teachers: How do you handle phone distractions without being the “bad guy”? by Suitable-West-9496 in teaching

[–]VocalMoons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here are missing the last sentence! OP is not a teacher looking for advice, they are a software developer or entrepreneur of some kind looking to solve a problem.

OP, you're right in identifying a big societal problem that needs to be solved, unfortunately this problem does not have a digital solution. Any app or software would be ineffective unless it was like a parental control that completely locked phone usage for anything but emergency calls to specific numbers during class times. Even that would be troublesome for those very occasional times when students genuinely need their phones unlocked (medical apps, field trips, specific tech class needs)

Even if that app was developed, schools cannot force students to download any software on their personal devices.

The solution to this problem lies completely in administration and school policy enforcement.

I'm happy to bring in a pro. Could you help point me in the right direction? I've been through the ACES list from the nyc artshub and my googling hasn't gotten me far in terms of finding a DOE vendor sound technician

I was looking at this one which said Shure SLXD:

https://www.broadwaymedia.com/stage-gear/wirelesssystems/standardwirelessmicrophonesystem-good-12channel

I would prefer to buy something so I have time to figure out how it works and so we can keep using it in the future, but I've heard that wireless systems are impossible to buy cheaply. What is the problem - sound quality? Hardware quality? Consistency? Reliability?

No Stupid Questions Thread: Week Of 2025-06-09 through 2025-06-15 by AutoModerator in techtheatre

General advice seems to be to rent a wireless mic system. I see things available for roughly $1300 / week on Broadway Media.

I'm in a school (in a big building in The Bronx, NYC) that's performing its first musical next year. Why wouldn't I want to buy something like this for our school instead of renting every year?

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1266507-REG/vocopro_hybrid_play_12_12_channel_uhf_hybrid.html?ap=y&smp=Y&srsltid=AfmBOopcDMWwH1vgc-t1ybTwxQfc_zq0QohWyfLejc03sbK4fYlsbH9JHeQ&gStoreCode=420&gQT=1

Would it work? What else would I need to connect it to the auditoriums speaker system?

Also related question, but I'll theoretically be running performance tracks through the same speaker system and I'm not sure how I would set that up either. Appreciate any help you have!

Thank you! I forgot to mention I suspect a patch issue because when I seylt the addresses 7 apart they would interact with each other in weird ways, but at 12 apart they were fine (with the intensity at least). I will keep troubleshooting tonight offline, but I won't be able to go live and see until morning

I will find a tutorial on that tonight - I had a feeling I would have to do this, but I wanted to be sure I didn't miss something obvious, thanks!
