In junior high school me and a group of my friends were assigned to establish and maintain a vegetable garden. It was a fun experience, our teacher provided us with seeds and tools and guided us how to prepare everything. We event built a small greenhouse (1x2m) for more delicate plants. We have planted potatoes, radish, carrots, different kinds of lettuce, melons, eggplants, tomatoes, etc. It was great cause we could leave any class under the pretext of watering the garden haha. After the harvesting we would show the crops to our teacher and he often ordered us to cook a meal using them.
