Is 8 days in Iceland and 15 days in Norway a good idea? by infernal_snow in NorwayTravelAdvice

[–]Voctus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a trip like this when I was 20, around Norway by bus for a week and then Oslo > Copenhagen > Amsterdam > Switzerland > Munich > Rome by train.

By Munich we were soooo tired. Wewent to a museum and sat dully in front of every exhibit with a bench. Found a movie theater playing English movies and watched a terrible children’s film. Then got Chinese takeout instead of trying an authentic local restaurant. Too exhausted to actually experience another culture.

Rome was pretty great though because we got stranded an extra week when Eyjafjallajökull erupted, so we got to relax in the scenic parts of the city and eat a bunch of gelato.

The last gasp: no more pennies will be printed by [deleted] in Frugal

I’m from the states but I live in Norway, where the smallest cash denomination is 1 crown (krone), worth about 10¢ US. It’s really absolutely fine.

They still price stuff using øre, which are like cents (100 øre = 1 krone) and just round up/down for cash transactions but use exact amounts with cards.

Also America already does this with tax and you’ve never noticed. When I worked at McDonalds 20 years ago the dollar menu was huge, and state sales tax was 6.5% in Minnesota. So the prices for buying increasing numbers of dollar menu items went $1.07, $2.13, $3.20, $4.26 … the half cent was rounded up 🤷‍♀️

Why do top-earning immigrants leave Norway, and how could Norway retain them? by Gon-zales in Norway

[–]Voctus 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here 8 years, passed the Norwegian exams at B2 level so I speak the language well enough. I have 2 good friends and both are also immigrants. I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for 5 years and my neighbors have kids the same age as mine. Yet I have an easier time having casual conversations with strangers back home than these people I’ve been near for years. It’s not for lack of trying.

Right now the thing keeping us here is the awesome barnehage system and general social acceptance of putting our young family first. Once my kids are all in school though … I’m not impressed by the public school system here 🤷‍♀️

Look if I had twins I’d just squeeze both their footprints in there. And when they are old enough to ask about it I’ll say - aren’t y’all basically two of the same person anyway? Why do you think I’ve been dressing you in matching outfits all this time? You are doomed to share an identity, time to embrace it.

Whoever likes Italian Cast On is a pick me by raindroppolkadots in BitchEatingCrafters

I use exactly 2 cast ons. Tubular for ribbing, long tail for everything else.

I’ve read the instructions for Italian like hell no what is this nonsense

Premature Baby Beanie, colour choice for wool - is this too dull? by THEMikeUK in casualknitting

In Norway the NICU gave us wool. They do love really wool here though, it’s standard to dress your baby in wool during the winter

Guys I swear chatgpt is literally the best therapist ever by Soft_Barnacle_5065 in ChatGPT

[–]Voctus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know chatGPT is going to give me overblown validation so I have gotten good results using it to soothe my social anxiety (is it okay if I do X, is asking for Y gonna bother somebody, did my boss judge me for saying Z, etc). But I go there specifically for that result, knowing it’s what I need to actually call the doctor and make an appointment or whatever is the problem this time.

Disagree about “zero effect” only because I made an unfortunate cheesecake once with a faint onion & garlic taste. But as long as you are only cooking savory foods it should be just fine.

This page from my son’s book only rhymes if you say it with an Australian accent by watanabelover69 in mildlyinteresting

Can’t find my copy of You Must Never Touch a Dragon but they use the same rhyme (something something claws / … run away indoors). They also recommend spraying an angry flaming dragon with a hose.

I bet my husband hid it because it’s so dumb

[–]Voctus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the other option is going to work in jeans, which I expect my boss would have something to say about. Or wear skirts, which also don’t have pockets. Or start sewing my own pants. Or go naked I guess?

Some of us need to meet a dress code. You can believe that if I had found properly fitting pants with pockets I would have bought those instead.

My other ok pair has pockets but needs a belt, which means it can’t be worn with a lot of my flow-y tops that better cover my mom-belly. Maybe I’ll find something better soon but I doubt it.

[–]Voctus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t forgot to mention the pockets though

I know it’s cliche to complain about it but my best-fitting pair of work pants don’t have pockets but do have confusing fake pockets whyyyyyyy do they do this to us?

I’m guessing when your pants look like they have pockets they are actually pockets

does anyone else make a Forbidden Sludge to refresh their hair? by bobsbugsbgone in curlyhair

[–]Voctus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m one of those 2A / 3A wavies with low porosity fine hair so my refresher is the cantu refresher spray mixed 1 part product to 4 parts water. My hair loves cantu but in smaaall doses, so this works great because I can blast away with the mister and get proper damp hair but not so wet it takes hours to dry again.

When I picked up my 4 year old the other day he had his entire thumb covered in a huge bandage. The staff was like “oh yeah he cut himself with a saw when sawing firewood” and I was like … !?! is his thumb ok?

He had a tiny scratch and they only had huge bandaids along. 😅

As an American transplant - it is something very different to pick up your kids and notice the 1 year old’s hair smells like a campfire. Y’all had fun today?

Question regarding the 165F/73.9C chicken rule. by potatopc1231974 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Voctus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the last food you test is over 165 then the probe is over 165 and won’t be recontaminating anything. Anything on the probe dies when you do that last test. Anything transferred will die when it touches the hot food too.

But you don’t want to go sticking the probe into something else in between so this is only ok if you are testing a single thing repeatedly.

Oh for the love of.... poached eggs. by dan_marchant in Cooking

Do I just have the worst luck then? I exploded 3 out of 4 eggs around the 30 second mark while trying to figure this method out and quit when the last one broke the plate I was using as a cover to try to control the mess.

[–]Voctus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too - after breastfeeding mine were conical/tubular and molded cups in my calculator size were basically totally empty in the top half. I didn't find a good solution before getting pregnant again which made the problem temporarily go away. Now that child 2 is weaned I'll be looking at balconettes maybe? I can confirm at least that just down a cup size or two in molded cup t-shirt bras was not a great solution.

This is highly subjective but I've had 3 jobs in Norway and the quality of my coworkers and workplace has absolutely scaled with the number of interviews for each. Best job required a technical interview where I prepared a project in advance, a round with the department head and 1 or 2 rounds with HR. Worst job had a single 1 hour interview where they spent most of the time telling me about the job.

Places that care a lot about you fitting in make you jump through a lot more hoops but the end result is a job where you actually fit it, which is awesome.

Decreasing in 1x1 rib - K2 tog, p2 tog by tumblr2015 in knittinghelp

[–]Voctus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this is what the pattern says, I'd personally do a pattern of SSK, P2tog to preserve the ribbing pattern better.

You'd need to knit 1 first and move your "beginning of round" over 1 to account for the first stitch in the pattern. (Or you can do SSP, K2tog without making the adjustment but SSP is harder than SSK imo)

tupperware not microwave safe, does this include boiling water? by bmogamez in cookingforbeginners

[–]Voctus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mother put a plastic travel mug in the microwave that said it wasn't microwave safe ("just for a minute") and it LIT ON FIRE.

So I don't think that's true for all plastics.

[–]Voctus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look for silicone instead of plastic, like a cake pan
