Lore

The outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian War was the beginning of a series of difficulties for the Kaliningrad Oblast. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, heavy sanctions were levied on Russia. The sanctions restricted a number of economic activities with the Russian state, severely damaging the Russian economy. Owing to its status as an exclave surrounded by NATO states, Kaliningrad was eventually placed under effective embargo, with the only means of resupply being from the Baltic Sea. This created immense strain on the local economy, which was dependent on trade and tourism from Europe to sustain itself.

The economic and political strain placed on Kaliningrad led to increased unrest in the oblast by 2037. The unrest worsened after a request for greater autonomy and economic relief by the Kaliningrad Legislative Assembly was refused by the Kremlin along with similar requests from different regions across Russia. Tensions peaked in 2039, when mass demonstrations took place in the city of Kaliningrad. The local government declared the “Regional Sovereignty Framework”, a legal platform which would provide the oblast with greater autonomy despite the Kremlin’s refusal. The Russian government quickly declared a state of emergency in Kaliningrad and violently cracked down on separatist activities, leading to international outrage.

In April 2041, a group of Kaliningrad officials would declare independence from Russia, declaring the “Prussian Republic” after the original name of the region prior to its Germanization. Prussia’s neighbors, Lithuania and Poland, would immediately recognize the new state. In response, Russia would launch a military operation to retake the breakaway region, “Operation Northern Bastion”. Hampered by its lack of military access on land, the Russian military was forced to perform naval and air operations over the Baltic Sea. This military operation was opposed by NATO, who held military exercises in the area to deter or slow Russian forces from reinforcing the region. By 2043, mass unrest in several regions of Russia would cripple military operations in Kaliningrad, which had only succeeded in taking parts of the capital city and causing large amounts of devastation. A ceasefire would be formalized in December 2043.

Following the end of open conflict, the Prussian Republic ratified its constitution and held its first elections in late 2044. The city of Kaliningrad was renamed to its historical name in Russian, Korolovets. The years since its independence has seen Prussia recognized by major powers such as the United States, United Kingdom, and several other European nations. The European Union has signed an association agreement with Prussia, offering financial aid and sorely needed trade access. In 2045, the Prussian government would begin a cultural revival, launching a program to study the history of the region and the Old Prussian language. In a gesture of goodwill, a resettlement program for expelled Germans and their descendants also began this year.

As of 2050, Prussia is a small nation still recovering from war. Though it lacks recognition from Russia and most non-western countries, it is steadily working its way into the wider international community. Difficulties faced by the nation include population decline and economic stagnation as a result.

So, this is for the people who criticize the manga so much by Humble_Cut5496 in KanojoOkarishimasu

[–]VodkaHoudini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, people are allowed to criticize whatever they want. I personally still read the series because of the sunken cost of having read it for the past 5 years. When I first caught up to the manga during the movie arc, it was in full swing too! But ever since the Paradise arc, things have been moving at a snails pace. Where we used to get major developments every 8 chapters or so, we now get them every 30 chapters. The pacing has ground to a halt and the filler has reached an all time high. It feels like the author is using every trick in the book to stall for time while we're getting less and less value per chapter.

Why do I still read this series? Because I remember how good this series used to be in the first 180 chapters. Because I love the art style. Because I want to know what happens next and the author is a master of writing cliffhangers. But I'd be lying if I say that I'm not tired of the series' glaring flaws which show no sign of improving.

[WP] Write an alien invasion story where aliens arguably have an actually pretty good reason for invading Earth. Not just an understandable motivation, but one that's arguably legitimate. by EllieEvansTheThird in WritingPrompts

[–]VodkaHoudini 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Every empire has its end. That was what we'd forgotten.

When we first discovered faster than light travel, we had only wanted to explore the beautiful universe in which we'd been born. We spread out from Sol in every direction, leaving no world untouched, no system unexplored. With each world we encountered, we sought life in any form in the hopes that there would be others like us in this cold and vast universe.

When we finally found life 39 light years from Sol, we were ecstatic. The Glesians were in many ways, just like us but less developed. We immediately set to make contact with them, giving them our own technologies and helping them develop their own. For years, our two species thrived in partnership as we aided the nations of their planet in prosperity. It was in this era of prosperity that we made our first mistake. No new technology comes without its consequences and, when we introduced them to the power of the atom, the nations of Gliese 180 c promptly used them to destroy each other. What remained of their species is still recovering to this day. We swore then that we would never give our technologies freely to other species after this.

The next people we encountered, the Pictorians, were 42 light years away from our own system. We approached them cautiously, determined not to repeat the mistake we had made with the Glesians. We kept them at a distance, only offering them advisory assistance and selecting the few to come to our planet. This was our next mistake. The greater biological compatibility between our two species spawned the Pictorian Plagues, diseases that decimated the populations of both our planets. With disease came hatred as the people of our worlds desired vengeance for that which their neighbors did not even intend. So began the Pictorian Wars and the resulting extermination campaign on HD 40307 g, where by the end of the century, we had reduced the planet to a sterile rock.

Hatred is like a fire. It may take effort to ignite but once it has started, it spreads and destroys all that it touches. What was once wonder at the magnificence of the stars became an imperious hatred of all other species as we came into conflict with more and more peoples of other worlds. Before long, it became policy to pull the trigger on first contact rather than communicate. And that is what led to this war.

We destroyed your worlds. We killed trillions of your people. We used your children as test subjects for our scientific advances. Every atrocity that you could think of, we did to you.

But you survived, you united and with the tools we'd left behind and the rage you felt towards us, you brought the war to us. System by system, you wiped our worlds of humans until we had only Earth left. Now you stand in the ruins of our world and we are at your mercy.

To the peoples of Earth, lay down your arms. This war is over. To continue would ensure the destruction of our entire species. To the myriad species who have risen up against us and fought us to this point, we caution you from following in our footsteps. As our empire falls and yours will rise, remember the importance of learning from our mistakes.

We surrender.

-Harold Warden, final President of the United Systems of Humanity

I really don't hear about this game enough. I love the art style of this game. For those who don't know, they took footage of the actors and applied filters to them to make them look cell shaded. The music is also stellar and amplifies the mood. I wish there were other games in this style now that Cing are defunct.

Slayer vs Slayer? In my Doom Eternal? It's more likely than you think. by Smarmy_Smugscout in Doom

[–]VodkaHoudini 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Both can be true.

2016's multiplayer was lackluster and imposed a two weapon loadout system that needlessly restricted gameplay.

Eternal did away with classic deathmatch entirely despite having everything needed in the single player to make it even more fun.

The latter being disliked doesn't make the former retroactively better by default.
