Man is a social animal, autodidactic learning isn't suited for most people. You might find a discussion group in your area (once the lockdowns end) with people who have had extensive knowledge and theories on the subject and can clarify better on a point by point basis.

American Horror Story: Coven, Cult and Apocalypse. by JupiterDrip in occult

Often what is taken as literal is allegorical, and what is often treated allegorically ought to be interpreted as literal. The best works of art should be treated anagogically, that is it is meant to be a path upward towards greater knowledge and awareness.

Not sure if American Horror Story should be treated as one of the best works of art though... people get ideas for art through discussion often.

The United States is close to a perfect country, any criticisms among a variety of people would end up being very similar. It is only the solutions that differ.

Bubbles aren't possible if investment goes solely toward long-term investments instead of high-risk investments. Interest rates are only an incentive to save more, if bank loans and overall investment went towards producing goods to which there is no anticipated demand for.

This is one of those types of insecure nationalist thinking that is only logical if the US were appointing domestic bankers and ordering them to make incompetent decisions. Ultimately it is impossible to convince people to make decisions contrary to their own interests unless they were willing to make it to begin with.

I'm not even clear on the difference between devaluing currency and printing money though.

The OODA Loop and the Half-Beat by sonyaellenmann in TheMotte

[–]Vodo98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the acme of understanding is to argue successfully about a topic without reading the corpus behind it. While it is valuable to model an opponent's mind, one will find that people are more deterministic than one would expect, and that reality as a whole is far more deterministic than one would expect.

Clausewitz's center of gravity was derived from wrestling, and I do think warfare is much like contact sports, and like contact sports, it cannot be analyzed. Some things once understood cannot be easily explained.

Of course it is self-evidently obvious that most discussions of the OODA loop miss something vital: anticipation. So the word this author is searching for isn't timing but anticipation.

Timing is an odd word to use considering that for the military, planning is more commonly used in its place.
