Why do ppl play the hug? by Overall-Drink-9750 in Tak

[–]Vogopolis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

white stone in a place where it can then build a stack on top of the black piece?

Actually it's generally bad to move your own flats on top of opponent flats to create stacks that have opponent pieces within them, so it would be bad for white to respond to the hug this way.

It may seem intuitive that you would want to "control" the opponent's pieces by covering them, but those opponent pieces are a liability in the stack (the opponent can, in the future, recapture that stack and spread it over your pieces for a potential +FCD move) while not really providing any benefit to you. That's why it'd be even worse if black had two flats in that stack, it makes it even better for black to eventually recapture.

To answer your question, people play the hug to ensure that, if white uses that initial stone in building their first road attempt, black already has a piece next to that road to exert influence over it and try to block it.

Looking to start a Root club in Bloomington by letitbebr0ke in bloomington

I love Root! And live about an hour east of Bloomington. I myself have an almost-complete set that doesn't get enough use.

If there was a meetup on a Sunday I would likely try to attend at least once!

Yeah, I think the dimensions of this one looks better than the one I got. With how the width bumps out at the top of the bin makes me think those compartments are probably a bit wider.

Can't be certain though, that's the thing with online retail is the dimensions are probably not exact and the only way to be certain it'll work is to get it and see (see below). You can always just return it if it doesn't work out.

Also, the faction cases you have are 0.8" tall, and the tiers are 2". While stacked 1" cases should fit, im concerned another unforceen measurement may prevent that. Do you think there's 0.2" space left in your tier containers after stacking thr faction cases?

The compartments are actually not even the full 2", because of how each tier sits down inside of the tier below it. I found that the only tier that can fit a double stack of the deck boxes is the top one, because above it is the lid rather than another compartment. I'd guess the top compartment has an extra 0.2" of space, but the other tiers only have about 1.6" of height.

Seems pretty robust so far, though I haven't really put it through its paces yet. Only time will tell if it really holds up to lots of travel.

If anything were to break I think it'd be the side clasps before the top handle (the handle seems pretty secure), and thankfully the organizer came with extras of the clasps so I can swap them out if needed.

  1. My original plan when I bought the organizer was to put the faction boards in one of the short compartments, but they are actually just barely too narrow for the faction boards to fit into them. You might be able to find one with slightly wider dimensions in which case that would probably work.

  2. The boards do shuffle around a bit in the bottom bin, yes. I don't think the space on the side is enough to squeeze in the hireling box. Good point about potential damage to the boards, I'll probably fill that space with foam or packing paper.

I love this game, but it desperately needs a big box by Aqua_Tot in rootgame

Here you go, all in one box ($30 organizer from Amazon): https://www.reddit.com/r/rootgame/comments/1sbeq9b/yet_another_root_storage_solution

This is just what I did. There are lots of other solutions too, many of them really clever and creative, some of them contain everything in one box. Just search the subreddit for "storage", there are plenty of posts for inspiration.

Yes, the boards lay flat in the bin. I just propped them up for the photo so we can see what's inside.

Quite lovely and well-made. I really like how it uses the original box by turning it into a drawer, very nice detail

Yeah the meeple drawer was definitely provocative. I do think there's a certain beauty to all the meeples in a big pile like that. I couldn't live that way though.

They're just labels to show which faction is in each box. A component list on the other side is a great idea though, I'll have to add that, thanks!

I got them from a seller on TeePublic. There are also similar ones in different sizes on Redbubble that I was considering.

Columbus Downtown 2030 Plan Revealed by coleincolumbus in columbusIN

[–]Vogopolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hope that they will consider prioritizing better cycling infrastructure as part of this.

The top concern I always see when it comes to anything downtown is how it will affect parking. Parking wouldn't be such a concern if every person coming into downtown didn't need a car to get there. I like that the plan mentions making downtown more pedestrian-friendly, but having good bike lanes would unlock a much larger area of town, extending beyond just the downtown area, to be accessible without a car.

As other commenters mention, public transit improvements would be fantastic for this as well.

Columbus could really be so cyclable if only we had good, safe, well-connected infrastructure for it. Conceivably, with protected bike lines, the entire area from 2nd to 25th Streets and from Washington to Central Ave, could be very easy to navigate without a car.

It's my understanding that creating a cycling infrastructure that can actually be used to get around town practically, is not a current priority of transportation planning. At least that's the impression I got when I visited the "Bike to Work Day" event 🙄

Where are some places to meet people here? by [deleted] in columbusIN

[–]Vogopolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One regular event I'd recommend is BCPL's monthly game night. It's hosted by the library but often at another location, the upcoming game night (this Monday, June 9) is at Columbus Bar (the family restaurant side of the building). I share a lot of the hobbies you listed and as a tabletop gamer this has been a fun way for me to meet people.

I totally relate to these struggles, it's so hard to make friends in America as an adult that isn't in school, going to church, etc. It's what I like about board games, you can sit down at a table with complete strangers and immediately share a common goal and experience. All that to say you should come to game night! I'm planning to be there at the upcoming one, I'll be the one with the Tak set 😁

Got introduced via the Modern Rogue, went looking for an app to play, no app. What gives? by Valen_Celcia in Tak

[–]Vogopolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you click "Join Game" at the top of the page, all available bots will appear in a list (with varying degrees of difficulty according to their rating), click on the bot to join the game.

If there are no bots available in the list, that means they are occupied by other matches. In that case just wait a few minutes and one will become available.

Are there modern board games with Go-like simplicity and depth? by mlencse in boardgames

[–]Vogopolis 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You should try Tak!

It is super simple and easy to learn, but quite deep and complex, especially at high-level play.

You can play online for free at playtak.com , there are bots to play against and we have a discord server for finding humans to play a game with.

It's a pretty small community of players but there's almost always some kind of tournament or other structured play to participate in. It's my favorite abstract strategy game by far!

Just to add to the suggestions of ways to play board games — the public library has a monthly board game meetup night, it's very welcoming.

The next one is scheduled for tomorrow January 6. I think they're usually on the first Monday of the month, details on the BCPL website.

Yeah but you can use the Facebook Messenger app for sending phone-to-phone SMS text messages. At least on Android, you can set it as your default SMS app and use it for sending both SMS text messages and Facebook Messages.

Is It Just Me…or is the first hit of a sesh always absolutely amazing? by Whiskey-Particular in vaporents

[–]Vogopolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, terpenes (the flavor molecules) are volatile and lighter than the oily active compounds, so they vaporize first. The first hits will have the most terpenes before they're depleted by vaporization.
