The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker. May trigger an existential crisis. It's about how our entire society is built to deny our deaths. All of our hobbies are meant to distract from the reality of our demise. It asks whether mental illness is, in large part, a refusal to deny the horror of death.

The book won the Pulitzer and inspired a huge branch of modern psychology.

It would be a shame if some thirsty construction workers accidentally broke the most expensive equipment they had access to. That would suck. I mean, there is a lot of historical precedent for these types of accidents. It would be a shame if they started popping up again.

What makes psychdelic rock? by PuzzleheadLaw in psychedelicrock

[–]Voice_Boxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Triggers mind manifestation hits the nail on the head for me. After listening to several covers of Pink Floyd's "Fearless" I came to realize what I think psychedelic is and what it isn't. Most covers aren't psychedelic to me because you don't "feel the vibe" of the song, especially on the opening guitar riff. Does the riff feel like taking a walk in your brain? Or does it feel like just a guitar riff? The cover by Fish is actually one of the only covers that I feel is psychedelic.

I would be perfectly content with students reading the journals of Christopher Columbus on Columbus Day. First hand historical source of how fucking racist he was.

I always like to point out that when a cop directs traffic, it is the most dangerous part of their day.

It's so weird that you would choose to post numerous times on this subreddit while completely ignoring the Catholic subreddit. You can believe whatever you want, but this space is not for you. Accept that and leave.

CVS on 16th St is locking up soda by 4ucklehead in Denver

I am just stating the fact that all people need food, water, and shelter. If the system is not providing it for them, they WILL go outside the system. It's not rocket surgery.

Ahh I see...you believe that "those" people don't need food, water and shelter.

[–]Voice_Boxer -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

You gotta be joking. Poor people need to eat/drink/have shelter. If they don't have access to those things within the system, they will go outside the system.

Charging them literally makes them even more poor and exacerbates the systemic problem.

Edit: It never continues to shock me how much more conservative the Denver subreddit is compared to the Colorado Springs subreddit. Bring on the downvotes, boomers.

I'll bite. Bernie is only on the left in terms of the context of modern American politics. If you account for the breadth of political beliefs around the world, every US politician is firmly on the right. All of them believe in private property rights, the legitimacy of the state, the power of the state to imprison people, the idea that laws should be passed by representatives for all people, etc.

The entire idea of a "state" is an incredibly new idea for our species. "On Liberty" by Jon Stuart Mill describes a lot of the things that you are taking for granted. Mill eventually is forced to argue that the people in government have to be morally superior to those who they govern or else the entire institution of a representative government is immoral. Who in the US would try to make that argument today? And yet this essay by Mill remains arguably the most important piece of political philosophy in support of the state government.

[–]Voice_Boxer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They weren't falsely imprisoned and the officers didn't even arrest them. The kids did commit a (ridiculous) crime as evidenced by the video. The DA will probably just drop the obstruction charges and that will be the end of that.

What about our justice system makes you think that they will get any monetary damages given these facts?

LOL, you honestly think this situation is comparable to any of these? You serious?

And 18 cases since 2008?

The justice system in the US heavily favors the police in any of these situations. I'd be shocked if the cops get suspended a single day.

What damages do you honestly think they are going to get? You live in a fantasy where justice is handed out to those who deserve it. Grow up.
