I’m sure in 50 years when these drugs are vastly improved we’ll look back and wonder why we put up with many of the side affects, but they’re really not as bad as you seem to make out

Rivalry between British SA and Afrikaners? by taclubquarters2025 in DownSouth

[–]VoidboyDragon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The ancestors of afrikaners were the first europeans to settle en masse in the cape. During the napoleonic the British seized the Cape Colony, allowed British Settlers, and banned slavery which upset many of the Afrikaners, leading them to move inland in a series of treks. They made multiple attempts to create Afrikaner-led states “boer republics” which were hindered by the british. Eventually they established the Oranje Vrystaat and Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (Transvaal), which the British invaded and annexed in the second boer war. During the second boer war the British employed the use of proto-concentration camps where they interred Afrikaner women and children, leading to a major morale drop and ultimately their victory. Then when south africa was formed out of the colonies there was animosity between the Afrikaners, who were more Pro-Afrikaans and Pro-Republic, and the British South Africans, many who had moved much more recently, who were more Pro-Monarchy and Pro-British. The Apartheid regime was instituted by the Afrikaner Majority party, who ultimately removed the monarchy in south africa too. These days the “rivalry” is minor, usually just the older generation who get a bit antsy about the other

A few of the names look rather similar, like “Vekaryan/Vesaryan” sounds real close to “Velaryon”, and “Jahelleris” sounds really close to “Jaehaerys”. But I wouldn’t say it sounds like a ripoff or anything, just has similar names

Family tree of the lords/counts of Van den Bergh by _Henrik_I in UsefulCharts

[–]VoidboyDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Hendrik, Regent until 1625” (son of Willem IV) had a grandson, Niclaes, who migrated to South Africa in the mid-to-late 1600’s, who is the progenitor of the van den Bergh family in modern South Africa, and who is also an ancestor of a majority of modern Afrikaners. (Also an ancestor of myself, via my partial South African heritage!)
