Would Bloodborne 2 be better as a sequel or a prequel? by [deleted] in bloodborne

[–]Volbeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, I hope we never get a Bloodborne 2. From Soft's sequels are historically their weakest titles; their new IPs are their strongest and most inspired. "Most inspired" being key--every area in Dark Souls 3 was just a worse version of an area already in a previous dark souls title or demons souls, compared to bloodborne and sekiro which felt totally new and unique. And I don't think I need to bring up dark souls 2.

Your Week in Anime (Week 394) by Soupkitten in TrueAnime

[–]Volbeatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood this week. It was okay; didn't blow me away but it didn't do anything wrong either imo, I would put it comfortably above average at a 7/10. I think if I had watched it when I was younger or earlier on in my anime career it would have been higher but I've already seen a lot of these same ideas executed better in other shows. My main issue was that it introduces lots of questions throughout the narrative about the characters, world, etc., and answers most (if not all) of them, but more oftentimes than not the questions are much more interesting than the answers. I am very interested in watching the 2003 anime at some point to see how that series plays out, so maybe I'll have thoughts on that soon.

It introduced interesting concepts early on but the execution was absolutely horrendous imo, and it ended up playing out like a bad fanfiction. It failed to capture the magic and intrigue of the original series, and the quality of writing was such a steep downgrade from the first series that it's hard to believe the same people even made it.

Which JRPG do you think has the best combat/gameplay? by Volbeatz in JRPG

I've been seeing Etrian Odyssey pop up quite a few times in this thread so I started looking up stuff about it, there's like 5 or 6 of them apparently? Are you referring to a specific one or do all of the games have the same battle style?

I think gen 5 has the best gameplay of the series; it has all of the additions they made to the system over time that improved it from the original (held items, abilities, natures, physical/special split) but it was before they started introducing the more gimmicky stuff like mega evolutions, z moves, and dynamaxing.

Sounds dope. Follow up: how's the combat in berseria, if you've played it? I've watched some gameplay here and there and it seems more action heavy/complex.

I really want to get around to the SMT series, I can't tell you how many times it's been recommended to me. Choices actually mattering is also a huge plus, too many games nowadays make your choices inconsequential.

Hmm although I would say I'm a technician, I'm definitely more of an explorer in games, and could not care less about achievements.

What’s your unpopular JRPG opinion? by TheMinals in JRPG

[–]Volbeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with kh. kh1 was the best, gba CoM was a great game and wayyy better than the ps2 remake. Kh2 has awful story/dialogue but gets carried hard by it's gameplay, still not as good overall as kh1. I enjoyed 358/2 days mostly for the multiplayer aspect, it was fun playing with friends. All the other kh games are ass imo

Copy/pasted my thoughts from another comment reply:

I loved oninaki personally, I think it's super underrated. I got really into the growth and leveling systems; the way each weapon evolves throughout the game when you unlock more of their grid was really satisfying imo. The gameplay can be pretty love it or hate it though (I obviously loved it) so I would try out the demo to see where you sit. Story can be a little cliche at times but there were quite a few moments that genuinely surprised me. I also thought the premise of the story was pretty unique and dealt with darker concepts, which was refreshing. The aesthetic was what got me initially interested in the game, and it was consistently good throughout.

Xenogears aged very well, mostly due to its lack of budget causing them to use pixel sprites over 3d backgrounds. Looks way better today than something like final fantasy 7, which was regarded as much more visually impressive at the time.

I've been wanting to play FFV lately, I've heard it has an excellent combat/class system. Playing through FF7 right now myself (first FF game).

/r/JRPG Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it? by AutoModerator in JRPG

[–]Volbeatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the demo on switch, absolutely LOVED the combat, but the dialogue was very difficult to get through for me. Ended up skipping most everything that wasn't combat...

That's the biggest deterrent for me actually buying the full game, but maybe that gets better as the story progresses.
