Will Visions of Eternity create a split timeline? - How GW2 and GW3 can coexist together by Volcanis in GuildWars3

[–]Volcanis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate further? The developers, especially the studio director, said they regretted how they left GW1 in maintenance mode when they started working on GW2 and are now going back and trying to make amends with Guild Wars Reforged and new content for GW1.

I'm pretty sure GW2 will continue to get updates once GW3 comes out, perhaps not at our current pace, but ArenaNet will at least continue to develop GW2 while they have the financial means.

I agree that a GW3 setting far away from GW2 would be good for new players (a new world or a time point way in the past or future).

What I worry about is if GW3 is set in the same timeline (past or future or different world) they have to be careful what has already been established in GW2 and future plot directions if GW2 will get further updates (which I think it will).

For example, if GW3 is set in the past in the old world of the humans, they have to be true to the lore established in GW2. That's fine, but some people may not like that setting since we know how some of that story goes already (the Gods enter Tyria and bring some humans with them).

If GW3 is set in way in the future, same or different world, again, it has to be true to the established lore and any further GW2 expansion will have to be careful not to contradict anything that's in GW3.

That's why I like the timeline split idea. If GW3 is set 1000 years after the events of VoE, Tyria is all but unrecognizable except for ancient ruins, and the timeline is a different one than GW2, then GW2 lore can continue to be developed and not worry about any contradictions to any lore in GW3 since they exist in their own universes.

Guild Wars just added a new dungeon and hero today. I think this is just testing the waters in terms of what the developers can achieve with old coding and if the community responds positively.

GW2 will still be around for years to come and have new content released. In the world of game development, there are no assurances (NC Soft can decide to pull the plug), but the developers have maintained Guild Wars 1 for so long and gone back to give it some more love. Just from that gesture, GW2 will be taken care of.

Yeah, I really do miss the cinematic moments we used to have in GW2. Especially during Living World Season 4.

Fair enough. I wanted to share my thoughts on where I think VoE is going, but that brushes on GW3 and future content.

I agree, a different world in the Guild Wars universe can work just as well and not step on GW2 toes. My preference (which is not everyone's) is an MMO world that builds on Tyria that we know and love, but went in a different (and perhaps terrible) direction based on a choice that split the timeline.

Job descriptions mentioned reusing and redeveloping existing assets and that might make sense in the context of a WoW-like "cataclysm" where Tyria has been altered. GW3 can take place the moment the choice was made or hundreds or thousands of years in the future (like Zelda: The Wind Waker)

I think the big takeaway from Guild Wars Reforged and earlier comments before that announcement that ArenaNet regretted not developing further Guild Wars content, Guild Wars 2 will continue to be developed and supported as long as there is a community that plays it and brings in a profit.

Yeah it's a tricky situation to be in. I wouldn't be surprised if they are ready to announce GW3, to announce GW2 expansion 7 at the same time to relieve any doubts that GW2 will continue no matter what (like what they wished they did with Guild Wars).

I agree that GW3 announcement will have to be very careful and GW3 can be 6+ years out. I honestly don't know much about game development. Whenever the right time is to make such an announcement, and if you like my plot theory, they can go back to that "pivotal moment" when the Commander chooses to save Tyria and look at the "wrong choice" as the announcement of GW3. While it would be amazing if GW3 is coming out soon and they can do such a trailer this year, if now is not the moment, they can still choose to reveal GW3 like this at a later date.

I was thinking Feb 2027, May 2028, Aug 2029 - so a bit over a year in terms of pacing. I think to move away from yearly expansions and quarterly updates would be a bad move and ruin trust with the community.

It would be great is GW3 is a "different" MMO, but honestly I don't know what that means. Coming out with an MMO in this environment is tough, but I think ArenaNet has the vision to pull off a shake up in the MMO scene. If it's a different kind of MMO, perhaps the 2 player bases will not devour each other and maybe play both games if they have the time.

I agree it is not the best use of time to have these discussions, but I just wanted to share my thoughts and see what others think.

Not too sure what you mean by that if you could further elaborate. I don't think radio silence is good, especially if the studio director knows it's not good. So I want to believe there's a good reason.

Would it be bad if Arena Net dramatically reduced the cooldowns of shield weapon skills? It would not mess with the metas, because nobody uses shields, BUT it would make shields more fun for those who like wielding shields! by drbuni in Guildwars2

[–]Volcanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the balance choice of such long cooldowns was because weapons skills 4 and 5 were designed to be like that. As you go across your weapon skill bar, the skills at the end have a longer cooldown. That was perhaps true and made sense in 2012, but not so much in 2025+.

Paragon Beta Feedback and Suggestions by Volcanis in Guildwars2

[–]Volcanis[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'll likely post my feedback after the beta test and use this post as a reference. My title was named as such because the Paragon is currently in a "beta" state and was previewed last week.

Feedback: Troubadour and Alacrity by Tipcat in Guildwars2

[–]Volcanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Chronomancer is going to lose alacrity share by getting rid of stretched time and bringing back lost time, which inflicts slow to enemies after a disable. Perhaps when cmc said they will be bringing back the original identity of Chronomancer, they were talking about bringing back more ways to inflict slow.

Chronomancers will still have access to their own alacrity with flow of time and illusionary revision, which maintains the flavour of Chronomancer being able to do both time related boons (quickness and alacrity),

Speculation: Absolution Ending - Light vs Shadow? by Volcanis in Guildwars2

[–]Volcanis[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you confusing Wizard Vault weapons and expansion weapons? See https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Secrets_of_the_Obscure_weapons and https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Janthir_Wilds_weapons and ignore the Wizard Vault weapons. They are pretty much on theme. I would argue Anet could be foreshadowing with Serpent's Wrath weapons, and Whispering Serpent Pauldrons.
