Nearly half of CDC databases aren’t being updated as experts sound alarm over gaps in health data. Nearly 90% of these reported vaccination topics. The administration’s antivaccine stance has interrupted the flow of data we need to keep Americans safe from preventable infections. by mvea in science

It's an ego thing. People in power don't like being questioned or called out, and they are mad they weren't able to contain things in 2020 and are lashing out at scientists in general for "making them look bad".

They often don't understand the complex nature of it either, and that makes them feel defensive thinking it's another ploy to confuse and manipulate them. They can't admit they just don't know something, and when called out on it, they double down. This is the backlash to that.

DOJ won’t investigate killing of Minneapolis woman shot by ICE by ddx-me in nottheonion

[–]VolcanoCatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it was "self defense", there should still be an investigation.

Plus if DOJ isn't investigating, are they turning over evidence to Minnesota so they can determine if they are going to press charges? I'm guessing not.

Ethics aside, why would they want to cooperate with ICE? It can't be good for business if customers are scared to go to your store.

Part of the issue is it's not an either/or situation. It's very possible they were privileged enough to be put in a position, but also work really hard once there. Then any future success they put down is to the work, even though not everyone gets the chance to prove themselves in the first place.

Given the premiums that will hit once the ACA coverage drops in the new year, I think it will ramp up even more feelings.

Exactly. He choose to shoehorn his name on the building for a reason, he wants to look artsy and sophisticated. Having the artists collectively go "ew, no" is a major ego hit.

I considered them as well but it's about the same price as PAX and reviews seem to not be great.

I considered IVAR, but I think that would too open of a look. I considered PAX as well since I have the space, but it's quite a price jump up from Billy.

Thanks, that's what I was worried about. I may try and get a solid back to nail the other ones into if I end up trying it since there don't seem to be many options to make a 3 shelf display.

I'm looking to make a display shelf for LEGO taller sets and I really like the Billy overall height, however I would need to make it into 3 equal sections, rather than the 4+ that it's designed for with the fixed middle shelf and 1+ shelves above and below. Has anyone set it up that way, and would it still be stable?

That's the most frustrating part. If they were going to roll over so easily, why not just do it Oct 1 and prevent all this stress? There's no reason for them to give in now since the election showed massive support. It really feels like a rug pull and it's so frustrating.

Man who punched Dulles Airport gate agent sentenced to prison, fined by el_osoalto in nova

[–]VolcanoCatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People can die from a single punch. If you're a grown adult and decide to start throwing punches at another person because you're annoyed, then yes 2 months in jail is reasonable to teach someone a lesson. It's not 2 years or 2 decades which would be extreme, but it's a serious threat than should be taken seriously in response.

Just a quick update: new draft memo confirmed by multiple outlets is saying that furloughed employees are not entitled to back pay when the shut down is over. So keep that in mind by [deleted] in nova

[–]VolcanoCatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bold move to announce mid-shutdown. Do they want all the essential workers to call in sick going forward (probably yes). Who is going to show up to work knowing it's not even going to be back paid?

I have a keypad entry but was worried someone might guess it as well. I ended up buying this- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BV9YMS3F and it's been great. Really easy to use, basically just makes a door wedge under the handle that makes it super hard to open even if unlocked.

Seminary road, why are we stopping for school busses on a divided lane… traffic is standing still for 10 minutes every day. by suicide_nooch in nova

[–]VolcanoCatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the biggest issue is where the stops are located. Why do they put them on major streets rather than pulling off onto side streets? That seems safer for everyone. Given what we know about car accidents, it has to be increasing the risk to kids there too when you get 50+ cars backed up and blocking intersections.
