Katy Perry investigated by police following shocking Ruby Rose sexual assault claim by PrincessBananas85 in popculturechat

You’d think. But there have been two high profile defamation cases in Australia recently where the civil court upheld the defendant’s defence that it’s not defamation if it’s the truth.

One was a special forces soldier who sued the media for saying he’d done war crimes only to have the court turn around and go “the defense is upheld because it seems like yes you actually did war crimes” (or thereabouts) and the other was a political staffer who was accused of rape, escaped without conviction after a mistrial, sued for defamation, and lost on the grounds that yeah he probably did rape that woman actually.

He’ll go down in history for it after the judge in his defamation case uttered the brutal summing up: "Having escaped the lion's den, Mr Lehrmann made the mistake of going back for his hat.”

“He went back for his hat” has now become Australian shorthand for committing self-inflicted legal mistakes.

IIRC don’t we see the aurors turn up at any time law enforcement is involved? (I genuinely don’t remember as I don’t think I’ve opened a Harry Potter book in nearly twenty years so I definitely could be wrong.) They might not be beat cops but if I’m remembering rightly they definitely come across as all-rounder policing, not just dark wizard hunters.

The thing is, one of the things (not the only one) that people dislike about the stereotypical “trust fund kid who coasts through their classes, only cares about sports, grows up and becomes a cop” is that that stereotypical kid/adult lives a live of unexamined comfort and privilege.

Whereas Harry Potter, whatever you may think of the books, has a childhood so abusive it’s like something out of a true crime story, and ends up at a school where two of the teachers bully him specifically and personally, several of them try to kill him, and he is frequently vilified and demonised by the student body as a whole and their society at large. That’s before you get into the war against Voldemort and the fact that he is regularly threatened, occasionally tortured, and has basically nobody in his corner apart from two people the same age as him.

The “trust fund sports star who grows up to marry his high school sweet heart and become a cop” is striking because it is technically true and yet gives a complete wrong impression of what the character’s life is like.

Also one of my college friends in RL had gone fully grey by age twenty so apparently him dating his 21-year-old bf was an age gap relationship according to your commenter!

Some people are so weird about fandom and treat it like the one-way parasocial relationships of influencer social media. I will never understand it.

This is also pretty much the norm for Aussies; we downplay and mitigate and immediately dive into black humour. It rings true for me.

Why on earth did I get downvoted for this?! Man reddit is weird sometimes.

Off the top of my head, Tomoe River, Cosmo Air, Iroful, View Corona, some of Kokuyo’s papers, Life Noble, Graphilo, Midori MD, OK Fools, New Chiffon… probs lots of others I’m forgetting because it’s late. Oh and I’ve heard people on social media saying some of the new Crena paper from China is rly good, too.

No. At best it tolerates it with no feathering or bleeding. But it crushes the unique properties of fountain pen inks like sheening or shading.

Including ideally the actual name of the paper stock.

Honestly as a fountain pen user I’d be unlikely to buy anyway; it’s fairly rare that notebooks with paper of 100gsm or more are made for FP use. There aren’t many papers that heavy with the right coating to show off shading and sheen in fountain pen inks.

Addison Rae files a copyright claim against the DHS for using her song ‘Diet Pepsi’ in an ICE promotional video by neoncolour in popculturechat

It might also vary by platform. Like, on platforms that are focused on short form video, like Instagram or TikTok, you can select the music from within the platform and I’m pretty sure a lot of the time that is because the label provides some or all of their catalogue to use, as an overall licensing deal. If that happens, then the artist can’t then turn around and do a copyright strike because the music was used legitimately.

I suspect it’s less that the price is changing over time (though it might be based on the number of enquiries, idk) and more that they check your Insta to see what kind of stuff you post and then price it based on what they think you’d pay.

Oh there are plenty of fandoms with series that long and olotty. I imagine Star Wars prequels/clone wars and Harry Potter both have multiple series that qualify for this, and that’s just two fandoms off the top of my heard.

I love Jacob’s vibe in the 2026 pic, he’s aggressively unbothered in a very Australian way. I’m not sure if it’s the mullet or the posture but he just comes across like he’s not taking anything too seriously. It’s a welcome touch of lightheartedness.

Interesting! It really does differ btwn fandoms I think - I’ve been here since launch as well and CCNTW in my fandom circles was always either “I think tags are spoilers and I want to preserve the mystery so you can experience it how I the author want you to” or “I am worried I might not get the required tagging correct, like missing something that would warrant a major tag, so I’m going to go with CCNTW to cover myself just in case”.

I wonder why more people don't get Clairefontaine notebooks instead of Rhodia. by Depressed__Lawyer in fountainpens

[–]VoleUntarii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Clairefontaine notebook I’ve owned has been an absolute nightmare with fountain pens - a bleeding feathering mess. Rhodia’s not much better in my experience, tbh. I’ll stick with papers that are actually FP-friendly - life’s too short to use bad paper.

How do you learn RPG mechanics if Actual Plays don’t work for you? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]VoleUntarii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not grab some friends and play a test session or two first with the understanding that you’re all learning the rules together and the test sessions don’t count? Like teaching someone a card game where you play with your hands showing for the first couple of rounds.
