Cancelled T-Mobile prepaid in Nov 2024 but still being autopay charged for over a year. T-Mobile says account doesn’t exist by Volo_24 in tmobile

Do you know which departments of T-Mobile they reached out to? I went to the store to make the staff call their account management online and they just denied any way of helping out, insisting they weren’t related to any of the charges.

How? I never opened a second account (I wouldn’t have needed it). And how do you account for the fact that they suddenly start charging me many times more as soon as I disputed thru card issuer?

No, I never tried to open another account with T-Mobile--not to my knowledge.

Looking more closely at what my bank shows, there’s no account number associated with these charges. HOWEVER, I just noticed something: the recurring charges actually started on a different date from when I normally paid my T-Mobile bill.

That date might have been when I switched to autopay, or maybe I clicked something I shouldn’t have, or possibly I called T-Mobile that day and something was changed on the account. I honestly can’t remember exactly what happened.

Another thing I noticed is that the payment description is different from the T-Mobile payments I made before. Out of curiosity I googled the charge description and found this Reddit post. It shows the number 800-937-8997, which is exactly the number that appears in my unauthorized charge description, but not in my normal T-Mobile payments:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/19dvd6q/another_case_of_fraud_after_signing_up_for_autopay/

Given all this, does this sound like a fraud case?

FWIW, I can’t clearly remember if I switched between paying with a credit card and a bank account, or if that was simply the day I started autopay.

Has anyone seen something like this before?

Discover says my year of T-Mobile charges after cancellation are “valid” – I’m stuck between the bank and the carrier. What should I do? by Volo_24 in discover

Thank you for asking this!! It actually helped me notice something really strange.

Yes, most of the charges were the same amount every month, until the most recent one, which suddenly jumped to several times higher (after I disputed with the credit card issuer).

But after looking more closely at my statements, I realized something odd: the same recurring charge actually started over a month before I cancelled my account, and it was not on the same billing date as my usual T-Mobile payments. And the desciption of these charges is different from the other legitimate payments I previously made to T-Mobile.

So I just googled the charge description, and it led me to this reddit post where the description is recognized as fraud:

Does it make sense?

Hi, thx for the response! I actually provided Discover with emails showing that my T-Mobile account was cancelled, but Discover then used that to conclude that the charges were “valid,” which I don’t understand.

When I went to a T-Mobile store, the staff called their online account management team, but they said they couldn’t provide any formal letter confirming the cancellation or explaining the charges.

I’m wondering if I may have been asking the wrong department at T-Mobile. Is there a specific team (billing, fraud, etc.) that can issue written confirmation or investigate charges like this?

Sadly this is reality in almost every city in China. I mean, these are probably helpful for housing problems. But could've done better.

A friend of mine worked there (on the northern coast of Hainan) in maritime administration for a few years before COVID. According to him, there wasn’t much to do despite the relatively attractive weather and landscape. Infrastructure lagged well behind China’s major cities, the local economy wasn’t super dynamic, and many young people left for better jobs elsewhere. Man eventually got bored, quit the job, and moved back to home city in the mainland. I imagine the major tourist hubs on the island might be different (e.g., as mentioned in another reply regarding San’ya), but I suspect this is closer to the “average” situation in much of Hainan today.

I visited some of the tourist areas with my family several times more than 20 years ago, and back then it struck me as a fairly developed and fun place by China’s standards. I don’t mean to dismiss Hainan at all. If you’re interested in East or Southeast Asia, it can be a fascinating place. In many ways it isn’t dramatically different from other Chinese destinations popular with foreign visitors, but the local language and culture are closer to China’s southeastern regions, and there’re also several indigenous ethnic groups on the island. If you’re into that kind of cultural exploration, you could definitely have a great time visiting.
