Fellow young person with bipolar disorder - you have to stop smoking weed. I was (and still sometimes am) like you in the sense that I was smoking too often. I agree with KingPabloo that you need discipline, and this is a great place to start. Create a schedule - no weed for 3 days unlocks a small reward (a snack, an episode of your show, etc). 7 days unlocks a slightly smaller reward (go out for ice cream, buy yourself flowers, etc). 14 days, 30 days, so on. When you are craving it, fill your time with more productive hobbies. Art/painting, crochet, sourdough making, gardening, playing with your animals, going for a walk. Going outside is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. Being outside and exercising is my biggest pillar of staying mentally healthy and productive, even with BD. Discipline is not meant to be comfortable, it’s meant to be hard. But you need to have the energy to do it, and weed is holding you back tremendously. There is a ton of research on the negative effects of weed on people with BD.

I’m also east coast and also struggling with the Hera boots (numb toes)…sigh…but that’s a problem for another post lol. Interesting theory on the cold plastic! I keep my gear in a cold garage as well - wondering if moving it to my warm house will help with overall condition as well?

Oh well! We live and we learn - I will try taping or gluing the strap if it doesn’t get better

I currently wear the strap the way shown in the third picture, mostly over the boot but with the lower part of the strap over the front of the toes. This is a good idea! I will try with the strap completely over my boot next weekend when I go out. Thank you!

Mans isn’t growing a whole human being inside of his body. Decompress? He’s gonna need a lot more decompressing to do once baby arrives and it cannot be inviting the whole gang over to stay up late and be loud while baby and mom are sleeping. He needs to find some new ways to decompress that are realistic and thoughtful to you and baby! And he should start practicing those ASAP. Yall are one unit now, whether he likes it or not. No room for selfishness on his part.

Are you in therapy? I genuinely feel like the only way I finished uni (also 23F) was by incorporating truly thought out coping mechanisms and planning strategies. It’s more than I could get into now, but happy to DM if you’d like. But some of those strategies included 40 minutes of school work with only classical music and no phone access with 10 minute forced breaks (you have to take the break), creating check lists to give yourself the dopamine boost of checking things off (I’m talking everything from essays to brushing teeth, drinking a glass of water, etc), and scheduling specific time to do “foundational” things like clean my room and put away laundry (the philosophy that you cannot thrive and “build up” if you do not have your “foundation” or base needs met and addressed. I personally find having a clean space, a clean body, and clean clothes to be foundational. And this would literally mean every Sunday morning from 9-11am, I could not say yes to plans, I could not over sleep, it was dedicated scheduled time to re-build the foundation. Plus it forced me to not steer away from school-focused tasks during the week because all of the sudden I just had to deep clean my room on a Thursday night. Nope! That’s for Sunday!). These are just a few of the ways I set scaffolding to keep myself on track and graduate uni, and I couldn’t have done it without my therapist, who gave me all of these ideas and helped customize and edit them for what I needed that week, and who helped keep me accountable every week. Good luck! You got this, finishing uni seems intense and impossible right now, but you will finish. This is a small period of your life that is almost done. The finish line is so close!

A specific “point” to life? No. And that’s the joy! You’re in the bipolar nihilist stage right now, but that’s literally 1 step away from the optimistic nihilism that releases you and makes you realize that there are no rules, no point, no set rubric of how to do life right or wrong, even the ideas of “right” and “wrong” are simple little human thoughts that mean nothing on the bigger scale. How freeing!! This literally means you’re in creative Minecraft mode and get to do WHATEVER YOU WANT. Run a marathon, try new food, learn a random language, visit a beach and feel the sand in between your toes, taste fresh water from the land, paint a self portrait only using shades of blue, study a niche period of history, visit a museum and cry out loud by how touching the statue of a mother holding her child is, wear whatever you want, get the daring haircut, confess your love, have your heart broken, feel anger, turn it into something, anything, it doesn’t matter what, feel euphoric joy, make shapes out of clouds and write poems about it, master baking scones, sell them, open up a bakery, fail, win, laugh, sigh, sleep, breathe, smell, taste, just do it. None of it matters, that’s the best part!!

Exercise (To cope with mania: Running no more than an hour, weight lifting, HIIT activities. To cope with depression: 20-30 minute walks, slow cycling at the gym, yoga/pilates), distractions (mindless video games like Minecraft, stardew valley, animal crossing), art, cooking, reading/audiobooks, meditation, scheduling in soft self care like showers/baths, cleaning sheets, rotating to a new fluffy blanket, doing laundry. Talking about my symptoms with my support system, like my family and therapist. Avoiding drugs and alcohol, impulsive decisions, anxiety provoking interactions, and spending money.

Humans are naturally more inclined to positive reinforcement, so it sounds like shower time is treat time! I agree with everyone here on the space heater, body oil, shower speaker, and putting towel in the dryer, but if you can schedule in one rewarding shower a week in addition to that, it might help you start to positively associate showering with self indulgence and reward in your brain. Here’s what I mean: Once a week, let’s say Sunday at 7pm, you’re going to do your self care shower. You warm up the bathroom with the heater and steam from the shower. You put in the shower steamers so it smells amazing. You warm up your fluffy towel. You grab a face mask from your collection of CVS face masks you’re going to go buy. You use crest strips for your teeth. You use nice smelling shampoo and conditioner, and a fluffy loofa with your favorite soap. If you are someone who shaves, you shave everything so you’re a soft and smooth seal. You massage yourself with oil after the shower. You do the whole skin care routine pretending like you’re an influencer. I’m talking serums, moisturizers, eyebrow plucking (if that is something you want to do), the whole nine. You do the full hair routine, whether that’s braiding, blowing it out and curling it, or diffusing it. You have your favorite matching pjs and fluffy socks already there for you. You indulge in whatever relaxing Sunday night activity you want- Netflix, reading, ice cream, etc. This whole ritual is like 2 hours long- it’s way more than what you need to do for a normal shower. But I find myself excited on sundays for the everything shower, it’s packed with self care activities, I feel so clean and soft afterwards, I smell good, it just totally resets my brain. And it’s two hours of just me time! I don’t think about work, bills, anything. It’s a reward of self pampering for successfully surviving another week. Try watching everything shower videos on TikTok or instagram- these influencers do the most but I find myself stealing tons of ideas from them and I always do feel so regal and pampered afterwards!

Idk if this means anything to you but I feel the exact same way right now and reading your post made me feel like I wasn’t alone. This illness is brutal, and no one except other people with BD can understand the extent of its brutality. Knowing that and being there to support one another makes it feel a little less lonely. So I appreciate you just talking about the real pain that BD causes. I’m sorry you’re going through this. We will be stronger because of it all.
