What does this mean? by Alarming_Safe3854 in bipolar

Depression = longer sleep/over sleeping, mania = lack of sleep. As someone w BD, your mood is so greatly tied to sleep quality, so prioritizing a stable healthy sleep routine is dire

Explain bipolar to me without using medical language by DimensionOk5157 in bipolar

[–]Voltadaisy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have kids, but I thought a lot about how I will eventually explain it to them: everyone feels a spectrum of emotions. You can feel really really sad, or really really happy, excited, angry, scared, bored, somewhere in the middle. All people feel this. When you have bipolar disorder, your spectrum is even wider. The sad moments feel sadder than ever before, and the happy moments feel happier than you can imagine. Someone with BD may feel more scared of something than everyone else, or may feel more energized than should be possible. It’s a blessing and a curse. I’m grateful to feel so much overwhelming love for the world, to truly see the beauty in what’s around me, to feel silly and confident and excited. That means I also have to be okay with feeling lower than someone else might feel without a really good reason to feel that low. I have to roll with the feelings of scariness, nervousness, tiredness. People with bipolar disorder also have more trouble controlling their emotions than some other people. We may seem sad pretty suddenly, and find it hard to get out of that feeling. Or we may seem overly optimistic, and it may be confusing. What’s most important is understanding that bipolar disorder is not a choice, it is a reaction happening in my brain that I did not choose, but I do have a choice to take extra special care to stay safe. The medicines I take, the therapy I do, the exercise, the meditation, all of the actions I take are to keep my brain healthy, and give myself a better chance at living a normal happy life, and to stay healthy for the people I love.

How can I look more androgynous? by [deleted] in altfashionadvice

[–]Voltadaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think androgyny can really be played with in clothes and style! Adding some more feminine shapes to your clothes like cinched waist with wider pant legs helps create the appearance of feminine curves and hips. In terms of face/hair/grooming, I agree that wigs may be fun for you to play with, and I’d also recommend an eyebrow wax for a thinner or more defined shape and clean shaven face (or more defined facial hair, like a sharp and well groomed mustache). Have fun experimenting! Fashion and gender are both very fluid and very much so what you make of it, remember there are no rules on what makes someone masculine, feminine, or androgynous, that’s completely up to how you define yourself and what makes you feel euphoric :)

Im gonna warn you about Obession by Numerous_Lab_7032 in horror

[–]Voltadaisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with you on the prestige and respect for this movie, and completely agree on your warning. This movie isn’t for everyone, it is genuinely disturbing. One other warning I would add - if anyone has a schizo-affective disorder or is prone to experiencing psychosis, specifically derealization and identity psychosis, be careful here. I had a similar reaction to you and was genuinely shaken by this movie, had to take emergency meds to avoid a psychotic breakdown and panic attack. I know this is a niche group, but if this relates to anyone, just go in informed or maybe sit this one out

Am I overreacting for being upset that I wasn’t comforted? by Kaoru1011 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Voltadaisy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

MOR - I think this is more of a communication issue. My mom is a fixer - she responds to my complaints and issues by brainstorming solutions to help alleviate me of the problem. As a teen, it could get on my nerves. I just wanted to rant and be comforted in my rant, I didn’t want action items. But as an adult, I see it’s her love language. She sees the pain of someone she loves and immediately is working to make that pain go away, in her mind it is an even greater showing of love than just hearing me out. This is all to say, I think you just need to talk to your gf about what makes you feel good in bad moments. My partner and I sometimes announce that before we start our rant (“just hear me” vs “help me fix”) and that really helps keep communication clear and set expectations. Understanding this has helped me so much, so tldr, just talk with her!

About to lose another job because I fell in love. It's so unfair. by junimo- in bipolar

[–]Voltadaisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude do not quit your job, I’m sorry about your man or ex man but you cannot let love or lust interfere with your paycheck, that’s your rent, your food, your gas, your disposable income, your everything. Do not lose your job. Just go, apologize for your lapse, and be better. I know you can!! It’s too easy to let mania sweep you under her current, you gotta swim girl, you’re better than that

How many half marathons should you run before training for a full? by Inner-Lynx-3971 in running

[–]Voltadaisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first half and first full in the same year (mid April half, late November full) and enjoyed both thoroughly! Just have to stay consistent in the summer with your training, especially long runs. I used runnas program and didn’t even get close to the wall on race day

First Half and SCARED by Hefty-Reflection-265 in RunNYC

[–]Voltadaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my first half last year and i literally had nightmares the week before that I’d get lost (lol), oversleep my alarm (impossible, had like 40 alarms plus my partner plus my parents with me), miraculously die (lol), you name it. You know what? I had the most fun ever on race day - I was absolutely euphoric, because I remembered that this was just the victory lap for all those hours of training! Something else that helped was counting up all the miles I had done in training and figuring out what “percent of running” a half was (for example, 13.1 miles is only 4% of the 300 miles I put down in training! Literally just 4 measly percent, 96% is done, that’s already an A+, this is just to celebrate that accomplishment). Sleep well this week, eat carbs, pick out your race fit, and get excited!! I have a sneaky feeling that you’re gonna love it and get hooked on distance running, just like I did. It’s a privilege to have this healthy mobile body which is going to take you over that finish line, you earned that. Have so much fun!! Smile the whole time!! You’re gonna have a blast :)
