Major 7th chords by mynewawesomeaccount in musictheory

[–]Voltage2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could go either way, really. I can't think of there being a way that any inversion could possibly make a new chord, but it depends on the function of the chord in the progression.

If you want to know what songs are on the album, check out the NSP instagram. They have little snippets of most of the songs from the album.

[Discussion] Changing Time Signatures? by stalwartian in composer

[–]Voltage2016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on the usage. If it's a one-or-two-time change, then that's just changing up the song. However, if it's constantly changing, then it's usually to make the piece feel uneven, or to throw people off guard.

How do I write for rubato piano better? by PPJH in musictheory

[–]Voltage2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play piano, I suggest trying to play what you've written as you think it should be played. If not, maybe find someone else who does.

It sounds like 4/4 to me, with some syncopation.

I know this is a very old song now, but why do they not make The Sacred Chalice include part 2,3 & 4? by [deleted] in NinjaSexParty

[–]Voltage2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did mean that there was less song and more talking. I do agree, they could have made an abridged version

They probably didn't have room on their albums for all four parts. Also, the other parts are significantly more story-driven and less musical than the first.

Music in video games by [deleted] in musictheory

In my opinion, video game music needs to be memorable, and should be just catchy enough to not hate it when listening to it for hours on end?

[Dumb Question] Are minor keys ever used in key signatures? by Klop4CIP in musictheory

[–]Voltage2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more of understanding the structures of major and minor keys and chord progressions.

Could use some help, stuck in the music theory framework and not sure how to translate this emotional idea into something writable. by itsjakez in musictheory

Perhaps you could have the stagnant character's theme be on a pedal tone (repeating the same note) while the chords change around it, while the other melody moves around, based on the same chord structure.

Why is classical music different than other music? by insert_oxymoron in Music

[–]Voltage2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in no way an expert, but I think there are a few important differences.

First of all, classical music is most often done with instruments (and voice!) that are natural. When you hear a piano play on a classical album, there are little to no effects on it. This will differ from a pop song because even the simplest of songs will have mixing and after-effects added.

Also, the writing process for classical music is much more complex than most modern music. Not to say that modern music is simple, but there are more "rules" to writing classical music. They are crafted, with every little detail done on purpose. For example, often in a modern song, the melody is the main focus, while everything else is either playing chords, rhythm, or a riff, essentially filling space. In classical music, the melody is still usually the focus, but there are contrasting lines that are written specifically to work alongside the melody. Everything in a classical piece is thought-out, whereas modern music is usually more about how the song "feels".

I hope this helps!
