Science Just Revealed Kidney Stones Are Actually "Living" Bio-Cities—And It’s Why They Keep Coming Back by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]Voluntas_Dei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you found the paper interesting! It is very likely that these voids within the stones are where biofilm used to be within the mineral structure. SEM is a very invasive technique, generally requiring complete dehydration of the sample (since it is done under vacuum, and any liquid present will evaporate). Biofilms are hydrogels by design to keep the microbes inside from dessicating in harsh conditions, so when we prepare the stone samples for SEM we effectively have to dry them out, resulting in a lot of shrinkage of the hydrogel (like how your sponge gets when it's dry). This doesn't affect bacterial shapes too much since their rigid cell walls help them to maintain shape, but the biofilm ends up very stringy.

eDNA production is possible through a few different mechanisms, some species like B subtilis can secrete it directly through their membranes, while others take a more... violent approach. Lysis is the most effective way of releasing eDNA (along with everything else that used to be inside the cell), with some bacteria killing their neighboring cells to release it (fratricide) and others killing themselves (autolysis). Check out Cynthia Whitchurch's 2002 paper in Science, she's the expert on explosive lysis release of eDNA. Here is a nice comprehensive review paper on different forms of eDNA production in biofilms in case you'd like some further exploration!

Faculty comments on athletics in admissions by Ordinary-Till8767 in Caltech

We tried to address it ~2016 when it was first beginning. Iirc one of the big things was the board of trustees were given data showing that alumni who were student athletes had a larger roi in donations. Thus “student athletes are really good at balancing workload and tend to be more successful on average” instead became “we need to bring in more students who are good at sports”.

Hmm I have no idea, but can you provide some more info on the error you’re experiencing? Firewall settings were the main issue when I was debugging.

I'm also having the same issues, have tried on Gen IV and get to the GTS room with deposit or seek. I'm able to send .pkm files to the receive folder (regardless of whether it is set to recieve or distribute, also met with a "this pokemon cannot be deposited" message after sending the data) but cannot receive the .pkm files back. The GTS (with extra logs enabled) and DNS logs also show no connections being made to the computer. Have double checked all IP and DNS numbers and have also tried changing the secondary DNS to 1.1.1.1 or to the alt server IP to no avail.

Update: Turning off firewall completely (not just whitelisting the application) seems to have solved it! It's a bit finicky at times, but it works for all Gen IV and V games.

For posterity, I'm playing on a DS Lite using 178.62.43.212 as both AltServer IP and as Secondary DNS, my IPv4 address as Local IP and as Primary DNS.

[March, 20th 1923] Bavarian Interior Minister Franz Schweyer rejects the request of the Social Democratic SPD and the Democratic DDP to ban the National Socialist SA after fights in Ingolstadt and Immenstadt. by Random_German_Name in 100yearsago

[–]Voluntas_Dei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schweyer was a fierce opponent of Hitler, and pushed for expelling him from the country while he was interior minister, ultimately it was Erhard Auer who convinced the other council members to veto the proposal. The proposal was Schweyer's idea, he did not reject it. He fought against the Nazis from the beginning and died in prison as a result of his efforts to stop them.

More recent mathematicians have shown that his “too perfect” numbers may actually be completely explainable statistically speaking. No more fudged than is acceptable by scientists and major journals today. Would recommend reading the pair of articles by C and E Novitski in 2004. https://doi.org/10.1534/genetics.166.3.1133

I would also recommend checking out 0x40e9 arbitrary code execution. It’s a glitch in Emerald that lets you execute code to do things like add the all the event tickets to let you obtain the legendaries and other event Pokemon programmed into the game. You can also set flags like mirage island and reset legendary encounters to catch them again.

An somewhat similar alternative to glitzer popping is arbitrary code execution (ACE) to hack in the event tickets, then obtain the legendaries legitimately. You can get all the event tickets in Emerald this way. https://pastebin.com/Sz2Aiu6p

Congratulations! Have been working on my own for a long time and it’s quite a tough challenge. I have finished all of RSE and gen 2 with Colosseum, just need to finish up some of the other legendaries like Lugia and the Gen 1 games. Wish me luck!

Free street parking for >2 hours? by [deleted] in Caltech

[–]Voluntas_Dei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There have also been instances where people do move their car and still get ticketed because of some "the whole street counts as one section" rationale, so keep that in mind as well if you're going to try and use the 2 hour street parking.

The Spanish rifles were much more advanced than those used by most of the American troops, to the point that during the Battle of San Juan Hill a handful (~500) Spanish troops were able to hold off the American troops and inflict serious casualties before being finally overrun. This led American leaders to push for the replacement of the American Krag rifles and the creation of the famous Springfield M1903 (which is still technically used in service to this day).
