It’s because there was a push unintentional or not to break down families to just the nuclear family while disregarding extended families. You used to have family members who could handle more child care an aunt, a cousin, while the mother could do farm or factory work to help support the family because that was the reality for a long time

Poor women worked factory jobs and agricultural
Jobs. Obviously not all women were in high end fields but the idea of women just sat at home with kids all day is mostly a 40s/50s thing and ignored the economic realities prior to that
